The Ultimate Guide to What's On in the North East for Kids | Summer Holidays 2019

Welcome to my guide to what's on in North East England over the school holidays this summer. If you're looking for more ideas or visit somewhere and would like to share with others, please join and post in my UK Days Out Facebook group here. We'll be out and about most days and the best place to see what we're up to is over on Instagram Stories here.

The Ultimate Guide to What's On in the North East for Kids | Summer Holidays 2019

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ FIRST - This post has taken over a month to put together. I am only human and do make mistakes so PLEASE always check details with organiser before heading out to avoid disappointment. Event timings/dates may have been changed or events may have been cancelled and I would hate anyone to be disappointed. A lot of these events need to be booked in advance so I'd recommend going through the list and booking anything of interested ASAP before they sell out. There are plenty of ideas for places that don't require booking too.

Finally, a word on disclosure, I have worked with most of the attractions mentioned in the past and may work with some of them again this summer/in the future.

Free/low-cost days out

(Ad) Summer at Derwent Waterside Park

Derwent Waterside Park is one of our favourite days out and I'd highly recommend adding a trip here to your diary this summer. Use postcode DH8 9TT (parking charges apply). You can read my blog posts featuring our previous visits here:

Adventure Playground at Derwent Waterside Park

(Ad) Summer at Seaton Delaval Hall

Seaton Delaval Hall is open Thursday-Sunday from 10am-5pm. Currently undergoing a huge restoration project, it's an exciting time with lots to discover and learn. Visitors are very much encouraged to ask questions and discover more about the projects. In my experience, the volunteers always have a fascinating story to tell. Please be aware that over the summer, some parts of the hall may be closed at certain times to allow work to continue - check the National Trust website for details. Here's a quick peek at what to expect this summer:

Make & Do / Everyday fun
Every Sunday is Make & Do - head to the community garden and try a new craft from 11am-1pm (included with admission). You'll also find giant games, a mud kitchen, cricket sets, a sheep trail, lawn games and more available every day.

Construction Kids
Taking inspiration from the National Lottery Fund-supported Curtain Rises Project, this summer, kids can become a Construction Kids apprentice and have a go at some of the jobs you'll see happening around the property. All activities are included with admission/membership and available at no additional cost on a drop-in basis. Find the Construction Kids area in the cafe courtyard. Find out more here.

25-28 July - Construction Kids : I'm an Architect
Head to the construction zone to learn about the importance of architects and how they work with the property. Complete architectural challenges including building your own hall from bricks and noodles.

1-4 August - Construction Kids : I'm an Ecologist
Take part in tree surveying and bird spotting exercises and find out how Seaton Delaval Hall is looking after wildlife as work continues around the site.

8-11 August - Construction Kids : I'm a Landscape Designer & Gardener
Head to the gardening zone to create your own miniature garden, plant a pot to take home and collect your landscape apprentice stamp. Find out how the hall's original designs are being incorporated into the project.

14-18 August - Construction Kids : I'm a structural engineer
The hall's spiral staircases are a marvel of engineering, this summer, Seaton Delaval Hall are starting to conserve them for the future. Can you build your own set of spiral stairs?

22-25 August - Construction Kids : I'm a builder and stonemason
A lot of work is happening on site that will be fairly invisable once finished including making the ha-ha walls and bastions safe. Can you build a ha-ha wall and bastion to complete this week's challenge?

29 August - 1 September - Construction Kids : I'm an archaeologist
Archaeology is an important part of Seaton Delaval Hall's project, helping them understand how people might have lived in the past. Take part in this week's archaeology challenge and complete the final Construction Kids challenge of the summer.

Scaffold Climbs at Seaton Delaval Hall (ages 12+)
Not for the faint-hearted, join Seaton Delaval Hall for a 36-foot climb onto their viewing platform over the West Wing and get close to the restoration work. During these unique tours, you'll be able to witness the team carrying out repairs to stonework and chimneys before a complete re-roofing. Tours take place every Thursday-Sunday at 11am and 2pm on a first-come, first-served basis (ask admissions staff on arrival on the day of your visit if you'd like a place). Tours are weather dependent and a few safety precautions apply. I think they're perfect for families with teens and bet the views are fab! - see here for details.

Name the New Play Area
Seaton Delaval Hall's new play area is set to open Spring 2020. I've had a sneak peek and it looks fantastic! They need a name for the new play area though and are asking for your suggestions - the winner will be invited to cut the ribbon during the grand opening. Head to the Project Hub to post your suggestion (see here are a few helpful hints and tips and t&cs).
