This brand new musical shares the love story of Johnny & June Carter Cash as told through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash.

This is one of the greatest love stories ever told featuring two absolute icons and their ride through fame together.

Of course, music is at the heart of this performance and the stage is filled with a company of thirteen plus a live band who bring the phenomenal songbook to life. Audiences can enjoy performances of iconic hits including I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Hey Porter, Jackson and more like never before.

Steve is a big Johnny Cash fan and although I enjoy his music, I didn't know anything about his life or his love story going into this so I was looking forward to discovering more about these two legends.

Our Review:

Wow what a spectacle this show is. One that has proper live music at it's heart. A fantastic live band is based on stage, sometimes hidden behind oversized saloon style doors, sometimes fully in view and other times in partial view. But they're always there providing the best live music which sounds stunning in the theatre.

We're treated to hit after hit with note-perfect singing and many commenting around me how much the lead sounded exactly like Johnny Cash himself. It often feels like you're in the audience of an intimate gig in a dusty bar in Tennessee and feels very intimate at times. The kind of music that you feel in your whole body.

I absolutely loved the backing singers and dancers who really added to the depth of the performance too. Shout out to local talent Peter Peverley who trained at Newcastle Collge and had his time to shine.

The quality is off the scale here - Cristina Bianco who plays June was the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium for example. You really feel the star quality in this show.

There were a few stand out performances for me including I Walk the Line, the soulful Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down and of course, the epic Ring Of Fire which was accompanied by a live Mariachi Band and lots of fun songs including I've Been Everywhere.

But my absolute favourite was Folsom Prison Blues which was just outstanding and almost received a standing ovation half way through the show.

The story is billed as the Greatest Love Story ever told and I must admit, at first I didn't get it. It just seemed very ordinary to me and there's no big passion or big gestures. It's not a fairytale. But instead you learn that it's a love that's forever. A love that sticks together through thick and thin and is always there for one another no matter what. This kind of love is simply being together forever.

It's a rollercoaster of a story with death, addiction and betrayal all featuring heavily but you leave the theatre on a high and believing in everlasting love.

Such a good night of musical theatre and if you're a fan of Johnny Cash or Country Music, you simply must go and see this.
