We absolutely love the walk from Craster Village to Dunstanburgh Castle and back. It’s 30 minutes each way, offers beautiful views of the coastline and there’s a fantastic beer garden with sea views, smokehouse and a playground at the end. What’s not to love?
The walk is super easy to follow - simply keep the sea on your right hand side and walk towards the castle then when you’re ready, turn around and head back into the village where you’ll find the pub, smokehouse and playground. You can easily extend your walk in both directions. Just keep walking - it’s part of the England Coastal Path.
Need to know:
🚘 Paid Parking in Craster Quarry Car Park or Overflow (NE66 3TW)
🚌 There’s a bus stop in the village (X18 and 418)
🚻 Public toilets available in the Car Park (although temp closed during our last visit), Customer Toilets available inside The Jolly Fisherman, Toilets inside Dunstanburgh Castle (admission required)
♿ This walk is on grass and bumpy in parts. I have managed it with an all terrain pushchair but I think a wheelchair may struggle. There are a few gates but no stiles.
🐟 Activities you can enjoy alongside your walk include rockpooling, visiting Dunstanburgh Castle (free with EH / NT membership or pay admission), bird & wildlife watching, pop into the Smokehouse for some Kippers, play in the village playground, enjoy a cold beer and Fish & Chips at The Jolly Fisherman, visit the Village Art Gallery and don’t miss Piper’s Pitch for a Kipper Sandwich. There’s also a lovely beer garden with a playground just before you enter the village at The Cottage Inn (check opening hours for all).
Craster is not far from Howick Hall Gardens and Alnwick if you’d like to tag a visit onto a day out. I love visiting in the evening when parking is free after 6pm and it’s much quieter / you’re pretty much guaranteed to get a table with a view in the pub.
