2:22 A Ghost Story - Our Review
My expectations were high for this one. 2:22 A Ghost Story is well regarded as a stage phenomenon and has previously enjoyed a record breaking UK & Ireland Tour alongside seven West End seasons.
The story follows Jenny who is certain her new house is haunted. Her husband Sam thinks it's all in her head and they debate if ghosts really exist over dinner with friends.
As the dinner party becomes more intense, debates are thrashed out and opinions get more heated, the friends decide to find out the truth once and for all and stay up until 2:22 when they will discover the truth.........
Oh I loved it. 2:22 is like nothing I have watched before. I loved how relatable the story was - the 'old' house that Sam and Jenny have bought and are modernising. The grey sliding doors into the garden that are ever so popular now and even the fresh 'millennial' green wall paint.
The first time you have friends over for dinner with a newborn and get a bit snappy with each other and kind of realise that these kinds of nights are always going to be a little different now with one ear on the monitor....I was nodding along at how real everything was but this is then set alongside the paranormal and it's not very normal at all.
The every day, ordinary activities like making a pot of coffee or popping to the corner shop for wine all really sucked you into the story telling and it makes you feel like this could easily be yourself and your partner at the centre of this story.
What I didn't expect was for there to be quite a few laughs. We found ourselves chuckling along a fair bit. I found the character of Ben (a working class bloke trapped in a middle class dinner party) to be adorable and you couldn't help but love him.
During the interval we had quite the discussion about what would happen if I was adamant that our house was haunted.....
As I was reading the programme I noticed there was a 'Head of Illusion' - Chris Fisher who is a member of The Magic Circle and worked on Harry Potter & the Cursed Child. It's not every day you see this but there are some fantastic tricks that you might not even notice until you're walking home and thinking about everything again. I would LOVE to see this performed again and look for everything I missed.
There's a lot of loud noise, the audience is plunged into darkness when we least expect and the ever present clock ticking down to 2:22 is something we constantly have one eye on as the tension builds.
A thrilling night out that will keep you asking questions long after the curtain drops.
