Kids Eat Free in Whitley Bay

This post has been written by our writer Steve and is an advert for June 2022. Any shares / edits beyond this have not been asked for. The photos in this post have been taken on multiple visits over the years - we're big fans!

Is there anything better than fish and chips by the sea? We're very lucky to live so close to the seaside that it only takes a few minutes to get some fresh fish and chips. Trenchers is a great restaurant inside Spanish City in Whitley Bay to visit for just that.

Kids Eat Free in Whitley Bay

Kids Eat Free at Trenchers Spanish City

Trenchers have a fantastic offer available where you get one free children's meal deal with one full paying adult (main course from the A La Carte menu).

It is available during term time, Monday to Friday from 3pm until 6pm.  Check their website for up to date information.

The deal is really great value for money, the kids get three courses and a drink of juice, milk or water and there is a good selection for the kids to choose from too. You can see a sample menu here.

We highly recommend the kids Knickerbocker Glory and Chocolate Brownie - both are real favourites.

If two adults choose a main course and soft drink, two kids will receive a three course meal and a soft drink. This means that a family of 4 can eat out at around £30 using this deal. I think this is a real bargain.

Award Winning Fish and Chips at Trenchers

The food is all of the best quality and Trenchers recently won the Best Fish and Chips restaurant in the UK at the National Fish and Chip Awards.

Thay have also received the NFFF (National Federation of Fish Fryers) Quality Standard Award and MSC Certification for sustainability. There are signs around the restaurant which let you know exactly where today's catch has been sourced.

Jack had the chunky fish bites and the portion is great for kids (it depends on the appetite on your child but I'd say the kids menu is suitable for up to age 10 or 11). Sam had the small cod and chips, Harry had battered sausage and I went for the regular Haddock, it was the fact the Haddock is skin on that swung it for me, I really love fish that still has it's skin (reminds me of being a kid in the 80s).

Vegan, Vegetarian & GF Options at Trenchers

There are vegan and gluten-free options available (including for kids), they use a vegan fryer and a gluten-free fryer (although these are only available in the restaurant and not from the sea front takeaway unless pre-ordered).

It's great they have pasta for veggie kids as vegetarian Dee often just has to have a plate of chips at other fish and chip restaurants and they aren't that fussed on chippy chips.  The fact that they serve vegetarian kids pasta is one of the reasons we continue to return for family meals here. Dee loves it.

Special Occasions at Trenchers

There is a Grand Piano in the centre of the restaurant directly under the dome and the pianist plays some beautiful music from 6pm while you eat (we recognised some of the tunes but not all of them) which makes your meal feel extra special.

The service is excellent and the waiting staff are very attentive. As well as your classic fish and chips they have a great evening set menu that is good value and includes dishes like scottish smoked salmon, seafood risotto and sirloin steak.

The evening menu changes regularly and cannot be combined with kids eat free so bear that in mind. You can see the set menu here.

Whether you're looking for a bargain after school tea, a special family meal out, are dining with someone who has dietary requirements (or someone in your group fancies something a little different to traditional fish and chips) or are looking for a kids eat free deal to save money, Trencher's at Spanish City has something for everyone.

Booking is recommended but walk ins can sometimes be accommodated.

Other ideas for things to do in Whitley Bay:

Looking for somewhere to stay? I recommend Stay Coastal Whitley Bay (review above) or Premier Inn Whitley Bay which is just next door to Spanish City.
