Thali Tray Date Night

Over the past few months, Steve and I have been enjoying little date nights at home. With no babysitters or inclination to visit a restaurant, you have to do what you have to do. We started off weekly but now I would say we plan something for just us every couple of weeks.

Sometimes we cook and other times we order from one of our favourite restaurants. I love how many places have adapted to provide an at-home service and I am so thankful for this. One such place is Thali Tray in Ouseburn

At the moment, Thali Tray is open Thursday - Sunday 5pm-8:30pm (check out their website for up to date info as this may change). For their takeaway service, you order and pay online on the day you would like to collect and select a collection time slot. I ordered on a Thursday morning and it was all pretty straight forward. You can see their current menu here and order online here.

Thali Tray is super easy to find, it is just under the bridge arches up from the Cluny and opposite Stepney Bank Stables in Ouseburn. There are plenty of places to park nearby, either us the car park on Foundry Lane or under the arches of Byker Bridge next to the Ship Inn (see here for more parking info).

I recommend parking the car up and taking a walk around Ouseburn before collecting your meal. You could try this easy riverside walk to Di Meos, feed the ducks and grab an ice cream first.

Thali Tray Collection Point

Our meal was ready bang on time. Collection is outdoors - they have a little stand set up by their door, and completely contact free.

We ordered on Steve's payday and in the excitement, he completely over-ordered. I am not complaining but if we were to go again, one sharing platter and one sharing box between two would be enough.

Thali Tray Boxes

We ordered the Tasters Box to share to begin with. I am so pleased Steve persuaded me to try this as the Broken Corn Bhajiya was so good - a real step up from a regular onion bhaji. It is something I would definitely order again and I am so pleased I tried. The box also included House Masala Fries (morish), Smoked Chicken Skewer & a Paneer Skewer plus salad and garnishes. Honestly sit me in front of Gogglebox with this box and a beer and I am in heaven.

We live around a 25 minute drive from Ouseburn and our food was all still super hot when we arrived home thanks to these foil containers. We needed a break after our starter though so waited an hour or so before digging into our mains. We just popped the containers in the oven for 10 mins and were good to go.

With Thali Tray, you can pick your own two curries using their perfect selections or mix and match to create your own. You can also pick a bread and your meal is finished with rice, pickle and a soyawadi skewer, all for £11 - £12. There are Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten-free options too. Check out the full menu here.

We decided to both go for the set Goan Thali. The Pork Belly Vindaloo was my absolute fave. The Pork just fell apart yet still had super crispy skin and was the perfect match for the spicy sauce. If I was to order again, I think I would order two of these as I loved it so much.

Our Thali of choice also featured Chicken Xacuti which is chicken thigh slow cooked in a think masala sauce with coconut shavings and poppy seeds. I don't think I have ever had chicken cooked like this - it was gorgeous - really creamy and quite sweet. Perfect for scooping up with our bread.

When it comes to bread choices, the onion seed naan wins for us - it is just more substantial than the puri.

We ordered extra masala fries which were definitely not needed but look at them! You can order beers to take out too but we already had some chilling in the fridge.

If you are looking for a date night treat, I can vouch for Thali Tray. Their at-home dishes are just as good as their dining in options, if not better. I kind of feel like the portions were bigger at home. You definitely get fantastic value.
