Legally Blonde The Musical at Newcastle Theatre Royal

AD - We have been provided with press tickets to review this show.. Look out for a review on 13 May 2026

This iconic West End and Broadway musical comedy is back in Newcastle with a brand new production starring Amber Davies (Strictly Finalist, Pretty Woman and 9 to 5 the Musical) as Elle.

If you're not familiar with the story, we meet Elle Woods who has just been dumped by her boyfriend Warner for not being the type of serious giflfriend he needs as he leaves to study at Harvard Law School.

Heartbroken Elle follows Warner to law school and finds that actually, she can be serious too. Elle transforms from a shallow fashionista into a serious lawyer who is picked to help a client (workout star Brooke Wyyndham) win her case.

There's also a fun sub-plot featuring Elle's hairdresser who has a crush on her delivery guy and must 'Bend and Snap' into action.

I am a big fan of the original film that was released 25 years ago and was very much looking forward to seeing how it all traslated to stage.

Wow, what a night! Legally Blonde the Musical is the ultimate girls night out. Expect fashion, fun dance routines, iconic moments and catchy original music (played by a live orchestra) which you can't help but tap your toe along to with lots of laughs along the way.

The casting is absolutely spot on. Amber Davies is a wonderful Elle and portrays her journey of finding herself without losing herself perfectly. She commands the stage in the leading role, has a brilliant singing voice and of course, the best dance moves too. How does she do it in those heels?

A special mention to Karen Mavundukure who plays hair salon owner Paulette. She was fun and fierce yet vulnerable at the same time. The powerful numbers were full of confidence and she had the best comic timing too. You couldn't help but warm to her.

And I have to mention the Greek Chorus made up of Amber's sorority friends who cleverly play the role of voices in her head and add lots of fun to the production.

I simply have to mention the celebrity dogs. Wow Bruiser Woods (Sprout the Chihuahua) and Rufus (Milo the Bulldog) absolutely stole the show. The didn't put a paw wrong and I was actually in awe of their talent. So adorable and they really added to the whole evening.

I wonder where they are staying in Newcastle? Do look out for them as you're out and about. How cool having celebrity dogs walking our streets for a few nights.

Occasionally I find the sound to be a little off with big productions but it was 100% perfect last night and we could hear every word crystal clear.

Legally Blonde the Musical does not take itself too seriously and there's a whole host of fun, original songs that I'll be adding to my Spotify. 'Whipped Into Shape' by fitness influencer Brooke (above) and 'There, Right There' in the courtroom which debated whether the witness was Gay or European were two of my faves.

There are some tender moments too and the slower numbers really gave the cast a chance to showcase their voices.

The stage production has been brought up to date with the addition of Instagram, YouTube and Facetiming - it's so strange to think that these were simply not a thing when the film was originally released! But the main plot is pretty much the same and you'll get to enjoy iconic moments including Bend & Snap, 'Snaaaaps' and how Elle's knowledge of haircare saves the day all over again.

We left the theatre buzzing! A genuinely uplifting production with high energy and a message that you should never lose who you are. It also left me wanting to buy a whole new colourful wardrobe for this summer.

Five stars from us!
