10 Fun Travel Games to Play with Tweens in 2022

Planning days out and things to do in the evening with tweens and teens on holiday can be tricky and I am often asked about ideas for things to do with older kids that won't break the bank. It's tricky when they're too old for mini discos and find holiday entertainment 'boring'.

Something I would highly recommend doing is packing a few age-appropriate travel games in your bag to enjoy in the evening when you go on holiday (home or abroad). Or why not plan an afternoon in your local pub or beer garden (obvs drink responsibly) and enjoy a games afternoon with your tweens this summer? 

My three absolutely love doing this and it's a good way to spend some quality time together.

Smart Ass

We have this game and it's a real favourite. It's a simple guessing game with eight clues - each one getting a little easier. It's perfect for those who like to shout out the answer and can get ultra competitive. Suitable for ages 12+ (although we have played with slightly younger kids).

Mini Obama Llama 2

Suitable for ages 12+ and three or more players, this quick and easy rhyming game will have you in stitches. There are 250 silly rhymes to act out, describe or crack the riddle for and the winner is the team/person who guesses the most.

Who's In The Bag? 

This game is easy enough to carry with you / use for travel and small enough to pack in your bag if you'd like to take on holiday (the bag is waterproof too so easy to pop in your beach bag). Suitable for ages 8+ and best played with four players or more, Who's in the Bag is a modern take on charades.

Your challenge is to describe as many characters as possible to your teammates in one minute. There's a real mix with over 850 characters to choose from ranging from cartoon characters to historical figures. Just don't say their name!

20 Second Showdown 

20 Second Showdown is best played with more than 5 players and one I'd suggest for larger families / if two families are going away together. 

Two teams will compete to complete various silly challenges (think count to 10 like a caveman or walk like a crab) and the team who is the quickest will win. The game is fast paced, really funny and suitable for ages 10+.

Herd Mentality 

Herd Mentality is a simple card/pen and paper game which is easy to play in a public setting with no embarrassing challenges. Suitable for 4 or more players and ages 10+, the idea is for everyone to answer questions such as 'What's the best sandwich filling?' and to not be the odd one out.

Brain Training Game 

My kids love lateral thinking problems like these and this game is a brilliant conversation starter. Go head to head with others and solve various riddles. This game will really get you thinking and there are over 100 riddles to crack. This one is easy to play in the pub and suitable for ages 10+.

Brainmaster 

I had this game as a child myself, it was handed down to me by a relative and I'm sure it had the exact same packaging. I love the retro feels! 

This game is suitable for two players so ideal for single parents with one child. It's a chance to go head to head and outwit your opponent / guess their code before they crack yours. Suitable for ages 8+.

Quadefy 

This game is kind of like a reverse twist/ mash up between Jenga and Tetris and suitable for two players aged 8+. This game will get you thinking and is all about strategy. Take it in turns to place your brick and block your opponents move. This game is brilliant for spending one on one time with tweens.

Moral Conflict 

Moral Conflict is a fun game for 3-6 players (recommended age 8+). 100 cards all list a different scenario and players must all nominate a player who they feel is most likely to do this. 

At the end of the game, the player with the least nominations and therefore the best behaved is crowned as the winner.

Mancala 

Mancala is a quick and easy 5 minute game and easy to play in a restaurant as you are waiting for food to arrive. This game was originally played by Pharaohs and is a fast moving game of skill. Suitable for 2 players aged 8+, Macala is also a good game to play in rounds / a mini tournament.
