A Guide to Strawberry Picking at Brocksbushes

Strawberry Picking Season at Brocksbushes Farm near Hexham runs from June - October (approximately). It is important to check the NEWS section of the Brocksbushes website for exact opening dates before setting off as they can vary and sometimes they need to close the fields for short periods from time to time.

Strawberry picking at Brocksbushes is something we try and do each summer. We love it as it is a fun, inexpensive few hours out and we are left with lots of fruit too.

As well as strawberries, you can pick your own Raspberries, Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, Redcurrants and Plums. Approximate seasons are below but like I say, always double-check with the official Brocksbushes website or Social Media pages before setting out:

  • Strawberries : Mid-June - End of October
  • Raspberries : Early-July - End of October
  • Gooseberries : Mid-June - End of July
  • Blackcurrants : Early-July - Mid-August
  • Redcurrants : Early-July - Mid- August
  • Plums : Mid-August - End of Septemeber

Fruit Picking Prices

Entry to Brocksbushes is free but if you would like to visit the fruit picking fields, the cost is £1 per person. Small children are free - I cannot find any official guidance on the exact height restriction for free entry, but from my experience, children around aged 8 and under generally do not have to pay.

You then pay £1 per basket which is refunded on return. You will need a different basket for each type of fruit you pick - you cannot mix them up in the same basket.

Finally, fruit is weighed at the end and you pay per weight. Our basket above worked out at £6.95 in 2019 which I thought was really good value. Somebody in front of us in the queue had two overflowing baskets and his total was £22. I would love to know what he was going to do with that many strawberries.

I have never left feeling like I have been ripped off and the strawberries are always delicious. You can carry your strawberries home in their baskets (they come with a lid) or bring your own containers if you prefer.

The strawberry fields are HUGE. The staff will guide you to the best ones to visit on the day of your visit. It is always quite exciting seeing who can find the reddest or the biggest strawberry. You are free to pick as many from the plants as you wish. It is easy to get carried away. Strawberry plants are not prickly and I have always found they have been easy enough for little ones to pick.

Please do not eat strawberries in the fields - Brocksbushes are a lovely local business we should all be supporting (not stealing from).

You can take a pushchair into the fruit picking fields (but be aware you will be pushing on grass and it may be muddy/hard work). Dogs (except assistance dogs) and picnics are not permitted.

During fruit picking season, the fields are open daily (with the exception of temporary closures) from 9:30am. Last entry to the fields is 5pm.

Strawberry picking can be hard work. Luckily there are picnic tables and a small play area for children to enjoy as well as a cracking farm shop and tea room too (their cakes are epic).

Brocksbushes run a range of special events across the year including a popular summer fayre (4-5 July 2020) & Cirque du Hilarious (5 - 9 August) which I highly recommend.
