The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids

In 2023 I am planning on walking quite a lot of the North East Coast and thought it would be handy to share the different walks you can enjoy which are particularly suitable for kids as one round up post. I will add to this post as I explore more of the coastline so do bookmark this post to come back to.

North of the Tyne Coastal Walks for Kids

Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh

The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids - Beadnell to Bamburgh

It's around a 1.8 mile walk between Beadnell and Seahouses and a 3.5 mile walk between Seahouses and Bamburgh. You can catch the bus back for the return journey if needed and these walks are ideal for completing during a short break in the area.

There is loads to do along the way including soft play, amusements, boat trips, castles, playgrounds and more. Read our full guide here.

Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle

The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids - Craster to Dunstanburgh

This walk is around 2 miles each way and super scenic. This walk is not the best for pushchairs (it's not a surfaced route and the ground can be bumpy - you may get away with an all terrain). Also please notes there are no toilets at the castle so probably not the best walk to attempt with toddlers who are toilet training.

It's brilliant for primary school aged kids/tweens or teens though with a playground in Craster village and a lovely pub too. Read our full guide to this walk here.

Blyth to Seaton Sluice

This walk is pushchair / wheelchair friendly and perfect for bikes and scooters too. There is a playground at either end AND ice cream. Around 1.5-2 miles each way, flat with public toilets. Free parking and accessible by bus. Read our full guide to this walk here.

Whitley Bay to St Mary's Island

The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids - Whitley Bay to St Mary's Island

Whitley Bay to St Mary's Island is easily accessed by public transport (bus or Metro) and there is plenty of parking. It's 2 miles each way and suitable for pushchairs. There is a playground in Whitley Bay and St Mary's Island is perfect for rockpooling (do check tide times). You will often find a takeaway van in the island car park which also sells crabbing buckets and nets.

You could break the walk up with ice creams from Rendez Vous or mini golf / foot golf on the sea front. Find out more about this walk here.

Whitley Bay to Tynemouth

This walk is 2-3 miles each way (depending on where you start and finish) and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. There are loads of places to stop off en route including playgrounds, ice cream kiosks an aquarium and even a maze. Accessible by public transport (Metro or bus) or car. Read our full guide to this walk here.

Newbiggin by the Sea

This 2km linear route has a playground at either end, an ice cream parlour, lifeboat station and maritime museum on route. The path is surfaced, wide and mostly flat so perfect for wheelchairs and pushchairs and there is step free access to the beach with beach wheelchair hire available. Seaham Harbour to Blast Beach

The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids - Seaham to Blast Beach

Now I will say we cheated and did drive between these two places a few years ago. I will be heading back soon to walk the route and write an updated guide! It's 1.6 miles each way between the two points and these are some of the best beaches for sea glass hunting so ideal for kids who love to hunt for treasure.

There is free parking and plenty of places to stop for ice cream or a bite to eat. Seaham is also super dog friendly. I can't wait to take Fozzy. Read our full guide here.

Roker to Seaburn

The Best North East Coastal Walks for Kids - Roker to Seaburn

This walk is around 1.5 miles each way, flat, pushchair/wheelchair friendly and there are lots of public toilets and seating. You'll find plenty of places for takeaway / sit in drinks and ice creams and there are two playgrounds plus amusement arcades. Read our full guide to this walk here.
