How to make your own hot chocolate stirrers

Today I am sharing a super easy gift idea or treat you can prepare in advance or get the kids involved with making.

We love a warm mug of Hot Chocolate and in recent years have bought hot chocolate stirrers as a special treat. They are lovely but they are usually priced around the £2-£3.50 mark each so with 5 of us, it can work out expensive. I decided to try making my own at a fraction of the cost.

How to make your own hot chocolate stirrers

What you will need to make your own hot chocolate stirrers

  • 6 small Petit Filous yoghurt pots (washed out)
  • 150g-300g Chocolate
  • Festive Sprinkles
  • Fairy Cake Cases
  • Cellophane Bags (if gifting)
  • Lollipop sticks / skewers / mini wooden spoons
I already had most of the things I needed in my cupboards and only needed to physically go out and buy some chocolate and Petit Filous which cost £2.50 in total. I made 6 so it worked out at 42p per stirrer. Quite a good saving I would say.

First of all, you need to add a little of your festive sprinkles to the bottom of your yoghurt pot, then spoon in some melted chocolate. This can get messy so try and be careful. I half filled the pots and used 175g of chocolate. You can use more or less depending on how big you want to make them.

After making these myself, I would probably recommend using 250g chocolate and filling the yoghurt pots 3/4 full.

Next, poke your skewer / lollipop stick through a cupcake case and place into the yoghurt pots. Make sure the skewer/stick goes right down to the bottom. The cake case will hold it in place. You can add extra sprinkles on top before you do this if you like.

Then simply refrigerate for a couple of hours.

Once set, carefully remove from the pots, discard the cake wrapper and wrap in cellophane with a little handmade label. Store in a cool place and to use, simply stir into a mug of warm milk.

They were pretty easy to remove from the pots, simply wiggle about a little and push from the bottom.

I am so pleased with how these turned out. Older kids could definitely manage to make these by themselves which will keep them busy for a bit and they make a nice little gift / stocking filler. I love how they are so much cheaper to make yourself and you can customise how you like them too. Win Win!

Make your own hot chocolate stirrers - alternative ideas

Once you have mastered the basics, the possibilities and variations you can create are endless. Here are a few of my ideas:

  • Use your favourite dairy-free chocolate for a dairy-free version
  • Add mini marshmallows instead of sprinkles
  • Use white chocolate and icing pens to decorate
  • Use chocolate orange as the chocolate base
  • For a more grown-up treat, use Green & Blacks chocolate. They have lots of lovely flavours and the chilli chocolate will work well for chilli lovers
