10 Magical Christmas events to book in Gateshead now

Has anyone noticed that as soon as we hit November 1, Christmas has hit us in full-force? I'm actually surprised at how quickly it's come around and now that the kids are back to school after half term, my planning is in full-force. Many Christmas events have already sold out (some as much as a year in advance) so today I am bringing you 10 Christmas events across Gateshead which either don't require pre-booking or still have tickets available (at time of publication). There are some fantastic events on the list - let me know if you fancy any.......

22 November | Trinity Square Christmas Lights Switch On | from 4pm

Join Justin and Kelly from Heart Breakfast for this year's Christmas light switch-on. Expect music, entertainment and lots of FREE family fun. Drop by from 4pm-6:30pm to join in. Find out more here.

24 November | Christmas Fair at St Mary's Heritage Centre | 10am-3:30pm

Join St Mary's for the annual Christmas fair. Entry is just £1 on the door and includes a complimentary hot drink. I've pledged to shop/support local with my Christmas shopping this year and this event looks like the perfect way to do this with lots of local stall holders, festive treats, food and cards. There will be a children's art table and craft area too. Find out more here.

1 December | Make your own Angel Bunting at Gateshead Central Library | from 10am

Suitable for ages 6+, this event looks like a fab way to get the kids into up-cycling and create some unique, local decorations for your home this year. This fun family workshop with local artist Josie Brookes is a fantastic way to get the whole family together and get those festive creative juices flowing. Tickets need to be pre-booked online here (be quick - there aren't many left).

4-9 December | Enchanted Parks at Saltwell Park | after dark

Gateshead's popular after-dark adventure is back for 2018 and this year promises to be bigger than ever before. 'The House of Lost and Found' is this year's theme and you can expect 6 nights of magic. By the River Brew's HWKRMRKT will be on hand showcasing their fantastic street food stalls and there will be a bumper local craft market in Saltwell Towers with local traders and a pop-up Baltic shop. Tickets should be pre-booked online here.

8 December | Sock Snow People Workshop at Gateshead Central Library | from 10am

Suitable for ages 6+, this festive workshop hosted by local textile artist Kate Eccles looks like lots of fun. Using socks and reclaimed materials, children (and their grown-ups) are invited to create their very own sock snowman. My children have made something similar at school and they absolutely love doing this - our sock snowmen always take pride of place on our fireplace. Tickets need to be pre-booked online here.

14 December | Artventurers Christmas Party at Gateshead Central Library | 10:30am or 1pm

Suitable for ages 6 months - 5 years, the Artventurers Christmas Party is the perfect place to get together with your babies, toddlers and friends and celebrate the festive season whilst older children are at school. Expect a jam-packed Christmas hour with lots of activities including painting, collage, modelling, messy play and festive crafts. Don't forget to wear your Christmas jumper! Pre-booking is advised, you can book tickets online here.

15 December | Elf Yourself Animation Workshop at Gateshead Central Library | from 10am

This event is back by popular demand and I know it's something Harry and Heidi would love. Suitable for ages 8+ and under the guidance of animator Sheryl Jenkins, this is a chance to create your very own animations starring YOU as a naughty elf. This event is perfect for older kids who may have grown out of (or deem themselves too cool for) the usual Christmas events. Expect apps, green screens and lots of festive props. Tickets should be pre-booked online here.

22 December | Christmas Gateshead Pop-up Choir | from 10am

Fancy something a little different? Why not spend the morning with Side by Side Arts and take part in some festive singing. Low Fell Community Choir leader Stuart Angus will lead this one-off workshop suitable for all. Expect the classics and maybe even a bit of Mariah! This sounds like a really fun way to let your hair down over the festive period. There will be a chance to perform afterwards too (although no pressure if you don't want to). Tickets should be pre-booked online here.

22-24 December | The Frog and the Princess at St Mary's Heritage Centre | 11am or 2pm

This year's family Winter Festival performance will be told through rod puppetry and captivating storytelling. In the busy festive season, this show is the perfect way to add to the joy of this time of year and the puppetry will delight young and old. This one is a festive treat for the whole family. The Princess and the Frog is one of our favourites and with a fantastic team behind the show, I'm sure it will be one you won't want to miss. Tickets should be pre-booked online here.

4 January | Culture Camp : Pixilation Animation at Gateshead Central Library | drop-off from 9am

Suitable for ages 8-14 years, this drop-off event looks like a fun way to end the Christmas holidays for older kids. Young people will have the opportunity to work with professional animator Robin Webb and perfect the art of pixilation. My kids are obsessed with stop motion animation and making their own YouTube animation videos and I think they'd love the chance to try this - I might even buy them tickets for Christmas this year. Tickets should be pre-booked online here.

This post has been brought to you by Gateshead Alive - they host so many fantastically creative events across the year and are always worth checking out. I'd recommend following their Facebook events here and if you email GatesheadLive@Gateshead.gov.uk you can be added to their mailing list which is the best way to keep up to date with future events.
