Flight Attendants | In the clouds since 1912

Growing up, I dreamed of leading the glamorous life of a flight attendant. I’ve always been an adventurer by nature and being paid to travel the world seemed like the ultimate dream to me.

However I soon realised that with their perfectly pressed uniforms, immaculate make up and not a hair out of place, it perhaps wasn’t the best career choice for someone like me who doesn’t even own their own iron. I’m much better suited to blogging I think.

The lovely people at Opodo have recently reflected on this icon in the sky and I will admit that I still find flight attendants fascinating. Take their role as a fashion icon for example - they are always so neat and well presented, it’s really interesting to see how their uniform has changed through the decades.

Now that I’ve taken many flights over the years, I realise that a building a career as a flight attendant is actually very hard work and not as easy as I first thought. It’s also a very competitive career with Delta Airlines receiving over 100,000 applicants for every 1000 vacancies - that’s a lower acceptance rate than Harvard’s!

Did you know that the world’s oldest working flight attendant is a lady called Betty who is 80 year’s old. I want to be on her flight. I bet she can tell you a tale or two.

Let me know if you’ve ever fancied a working as a flight attendant or if you have a particularly favourite uniform from across the decades.

  1. Wow, I never knew they had THAT many applicants per vacancy. My friend has managed to wrangle herself a job with Virgin and says it's so competitive. Not sure I'd ever be able to do it due to my fear of heights. I especially love the Emirates uniform.

  4. That's interesting comparing the uniforms over the decades. I think we all at one point wanted to be a flight attended. R

  5. I like today's requirements especially 'healthy weight and neat appearance' lol. I did want to become a flight attendant as a kid.

  6. I remember having a brief desire to be an "air hostess" as we called them when we were kids! My friend is a flight attendant and he loves his job but I must admit it doesn't seem very family friendly.

  7. My good friend is an air hostess and I get so jealous of her photographs and travelling the world. Must be difficult to keep up with the requirements to be away so much when you have a family though. She is perfect for it, glamour is her middle name. Whereas I look like a slob most of the time!!

  9. This is such a cool post, I have never really flown so have never really thought about the flight attendants before. I would love to be a flight with Betty too, as you said she probably has a lot of stories x
