Set in 1930s New York, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage.
Her luck soon changes when she’s chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family…

Our Review:
Annie was absolutely fantastic and it felt like a proper old-school broadway musical with big numbers, dancing, star quality and pizzazz.
The young people on stage were fantastic and didn't put a foot wrong all evening. They really commanded the stage and their child-like traits were perfectly played (without being annoying to the audience). Their choreography and big ensemble songs were an absolute joy to watch. The stage is absolutelu oozing with talent.
It also felt like Claire Sweeney was born to play Miss Hannigan. Obviously she had big boots to fill but she is more than up to this challenge. Her portrayal of an alcoholic couger in charge of an orphanage was spot on and she really made the role her own as she staggered about stage. I thought Claire nailed it and really balanced how evil Miss Hannigan is with some funny moments without veering too much into panto terrirtory.
A big shout out to Alex Bourne who played Daddy Warbucks too. The programme described him as 'one of the West End's premier leading men of his generation' and I can see why - his voice was so impressive and he played his character with a real natural charm that audiences really warmed to.
Speaking of characters the audience warmed to, the role of Sandy the Dog is shared by two dogs and on the evening of our performance, he was played by a Cockapoo called Dizzy. What a good boy who was clearly thriving on stage. We all loved him.
And a final special mention to Tanisha-Mae Brown who played the character Grace Brown with such grace. She brought lots of warmth to the stage and performance and her voice is just stunning.
Annie offers a full evening of entertainment with plenty of big numbers and songs you'll know well being brought to life on stage in grand fashion alongside fabulous costumes, dancing and choreograhy and a few laughs too. Such a good evening of musical theatre and I can see why this classic is still going strong.

🚃 You can travel for free on Tyne & Wear Metro / Shields Ferry for up to 2 hours before your performance and 2 hours afterwards to/from Monument Metro Station. Simply show your theatre ticket to inspectors if asked (and if the gates are closed, show your ticket at a manned gate).
🚗 Paid parking is available nearby at Dean Street Car Park (NE1 1PG) or other City Centre Car Parks (check car park closing times).
🍷 I recommend The Green Room, Gaucho, PTMY, Dabbawal, Lola Jeans, Cafe Andaluz, Hen & Hops, Mowgli & Fat Hippo for pre-theatre dining. I have dined at all of these restaurants and can personally recommend as providing good value pre-theatre dining within easy walking distance. If you're visiting on a Saturday in term time or on any day during school holidays, you can also pre-order afternoon tea at The Green Room inside the theatre (children's pictured below for £10). 24 hours notice is required.

🍧 A range of food & drinks are available to purchase inside the theatre and their sale provide much-needed income to the theatre. Bag searches are in operation and banned items include alcohol which has been purchased outside of the venue (including wrapped gifts), cans, glass, metal, ceramic containers and stong smelling or noisy food. You cannot take hot food into the theatre. Selected performances do not allow any external food or drinks to be brought into the theatre (medical exemptions aside). The theatre is cashless.
