10 Things to do in Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Saltburn-By-The-Sea is delightful seaside town in North Yorkshire with lots of charm and a nod to its Victorian heritage. From its award winning beaches that are known for national surfing events to its amazing restaurants, there are lots of things to do.

We have visited many times over the years and I've put together this list of some of our favourite things to do in Saltburn-By-The-Sea.

Mini Train Rides

The Saltburn Miniature Railway is a 15 inch gauge railway that runs south from Cat Nab Station, near the beach, for around 1km to Forest Halt, near the Valley Garden Tearoom. The railway opened in 1947 and is now run by a passionate team of volunteers.

It takes around 15-20 mins to complete the journey and tickets are priced at £1.50 for adults and 50p for children so it is a reasonably cheap activity as well.

Crazy Golf

We love a game of crazy golf (even if it usually ends in a meltdown from whoever loses). Saltburn has a 9-hole Mini Golf Course right by the beach. Open Monday to Friday 11am - 3pm and weekends 10am to 6pm.

Hire Beach Hut

Those colourful beach huts are so quintessential of British Seaside holidays. The Saltburn Beach Huts are available for around £25 and are found just down the beach from the Pier. They usually have an electricity connection and a sink and kettle but check what is included when booking as not all huts are the same.

Seaview Restaurant

We saw The Seaview restaurant on BBC's Remarkable Places to Eat. Ever since then Sam had been craving the Crab Brioche Sandwich and we were finally able to go a few months ago and it did not disappoint.

The Crab Brioche was everything Sam had hoped for and my Hake with Gnocci and Caramalised Onion Puree was to die for. This was one of the best meals we have ever had. For full menu further information visit the The Seaview website.

Tram Ride

Saltburn has a Cliffside Tram (called a Fenicular) to get you from the town at top of the cliff down to the beach. It's such a fun and quirky form of transport. Opened in 1884 this is the oldest Water balanced Fenicular in Great Britain.

The Tramway is open 7 days a week from 10.30 until 5pm and only cost £1.60 for adults and £1.00 for kids.

Arcades

Built in 1869 Saltburn Pier was the first Iron Pier built on the North East Coast. Housed inside the Saltburn Pier building is Seldon's Leisureworld with all the classic amusment games and some of the most up to date Arcade games.

Walk Along the Pier

When the Pier at Saltburn originally opened it was 1500 feet long with a steamer landing stage at the end for services to Middlesborough, Hartlepool and Scarborough.

After suffering a few diasters including a strong gale hitting the pier in 1875 and a collision with a vessel in the early 1900's left the landing stage destroyed and a gap in the promenade. The redeveloped pier was reduced by around 300 feet into what it is today.

Spa Hotel Restaurant

The Spa Hotel sits on Saltburn Road with panoramic Views of Huntcliff, The North Sea Coast and the Surrounding countryside. The restaurant has some amazing dishes on the menu including Scottish Mussels, Massive North Sea Cod and one of the best Chicken Parmos you will ever have.

Valley Gardens Park and Tearoom

The Victorian Tea Room offers seasonal menus and serves some amazing Cakes, Scones and Biscuits. Also serving Soups, Sandwiches, Tea and Coffee.
