High Oaks Grange Review : A Dog Friendly Weekend with Hot Tub

Gaia and her family recently spent a weekend in North Yorkshire staying in a luxury 2 bedroom lodge with a hot tub at High Oaks Grange.

It's only a half hour drive from Scarborough and they had a great weekend in this luxurious and comfortable self catering lodge.

High Oaks Grange - lodge with PS4

Here are a few highlights:

  • Just under 2 hours drive from Newcastle

  • Luxury glamping pods and lodges

  • Fantastic on-site playpark

  • A 30 minute drive from Scarborough

  • Most lodges are dog friendly and theirs had an enclosed garden

  • Lodges with hot tubs available

  • Peaceful area with plenty of wildlife - they spotted deer, rabbits and squirrels

  • TVs in bedrooms and lounge, great WiFi & PS4 and a selection of games available (which you can order via your phone and they bring to your lodge)

  • The site has luxury glamping pods too, some have bunk beds for the kids

Location

It takes just under 2 hours to drive to High Oaks Grange from Newcastle. It's located just outside Pickering in North Yorkshire below the North Yorkshire Moors.

In terms of public transport you can get the train from Newcastle to York, followed by a bus the rest of the way and it'll take you about 3 hours.

Check in was super easy, we chose a pin number when we booked and that was the code we used to unlock the front gate and also to open the keysafe next to our front door.

Accomodation

High Oaks Grange has a collection of lodges, cottages and glamping pods. Most lodges are dog friendly and several have hot tubs, some of which are even covered.

We stayed in Elderberry Lodge, which is their newest accomodation and sleeps 4. The lodge was beautifully decorated, spacious and clean, with everything you could need supplied (including loads of mugs, bowls and plates so the dishwasher didn't need to go on very often, yay!)

High Oaks Grange Lodge Kitchen

There's a beautiful open plan kitchen, dining room and living room and two bedrooms which both have ensuites and walk in wardrobes.

Both bedrooms have patio doors that you can open put onto the decking outside. The garden itself is great with lots of room to run around and it's enclosed which was great for the dog.

There's a BBQ, outdoor table and lounge chairs on the decking perfect for the summer months.

There's lots of thoughtful touches in the lodge; the welcome pack included Yorkshire crisps, (delicious) Yorkshire biscuits, local speciality coffee and there's also some Yorkshire tea and milk in the fridge.

As we brought our dog Charlie they also provided a dog bowl with treats and some poo bags.

What we loved about it:

  • It had an enclosed garden! So the dog could just be let out to roam the garden and also great if you have little kids. We've found an enclosed garden to be quite rare in the holiday lets we've stayed in so this place scores high on our list.

  • The hot tub - which was kept at the perfect temperature during our stay. It was an electric one so no faffing about lighting fires either!

  • The bedrooms had their own smart TVs and so did the living room.

  • Comfy beds meaning we all slept well and even got a lie in

  • It's such a peaceful and tranquil place, lots of trees and wildlife which made for a relaxing stay

  • Plenty towels, toiletries and even robes and slippers provided

  • There's a washing machine in the lodge too

  • We didn't get a chance to use it but there's a BBQ provided (which thoughtfully includes charcoal!)

Site facilities

This is a collection of lodges and glamping pods which have all facilities included so there are no communal facilities (kitchen, toilets, shower block etc) at High Oaks Grange. Everything you need is in your lodge.

Playpark - the playpark was right next to our lodge and it was perfect for our kids aged 5 & 8.

It had a large climbing frame with lots of obstacles and a tube slide and also a lying down swing.

Wildlife - we saw several deer and rabbits as well as squirrels on site which was lovely!

Nearby attractions

High Oaks Grange is within easy reach of Pickering, Thornton-le-Dale (and Dalby Forest), North York Moors, Ryedale (Eden Camp and the Ryedale Folk Museum are both dog friendly with indoor areas) , Whitby, Scarborough and York

  • Scarborough
Donkeys on Scarborough Beach

Scarborough is a half hour drive away so we enjoyed a couple of days at the seaside during our trip. Donkey rides, cliff lifts, crazy golf and amusements were the order of the day finished off with fish & chips and ice cream.

  • Peasholm Park & Scarborough North Bay
Peasholm Park Dragon Boats

Scarborough North Bay Bumper Boats

We've been wanting to go to Peasholm Park for years and it didn't disappoint. We had a go on the miniature steam train, bumper boats and pedalos and the kids loved it. They also loved all the tame squirrels running around the park and eating out of people's hands!

  • North Yorkshire Moors
Danby Lodge Dragon

We drove through the North Yorks Moors and they are breathtaking. The lodge is right on the edge of them so perfect for hiking. We recommend Danby Lodge National Park Centre & Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Both have excellent facilities and are dog friendly.

  • Malton

We went to Malton for a Thai meal and the town itself looked lovely. It's only 15 mins drive from the lodge. In fact all the surrounding villages were beautiful and looked right out of a film.

We had a lovely stay at High Oaks Grange and would recommend it for a family break in North Yorkshire. It's a real home from home where you can relax and enjoy spending time together in a beautiful setting.
