9 Reasons to Visit Exhibition Park

Exhibition Park is 15 hectares of public space, it was established in 1870 in the south east corner of Newcastle's Town Moor. Originally called Bull Park but after the Royal Mining Engineering Jubilee Exhibition in 1887 it officially got it's current name.

Exhibition Park is one of our favourite parks and we have visited many times and I'm looking forward to going back in the summer months and for years to come.

Green Space in the City Centre

9 Reasons to Visit Exhibition Park

As much I like a city skyline and particularly the architechture in Newcastle, constantly looking at brutalism can affect your mood.

The benefits for your meantal health of spending time in green spaces is immeasurable.

Green spaces are something we need to preserve and Newcastle is so lucky having a park of this size and nature so close to the city centre

Whether going for a picnic in the Summer or taking your dog for a walk all year round just being in Exhibition Park will improve your mood.

Wylam Brewery is an event in itself. Craft Beers and Guest Ales are a mainstay but when you go for sunday lunch it is extra special.

All the Traditional Sunday Roast meats are available and they come with best veg and epic yorkshire puddings.

This is one of the best Sunday Lunches I have had. The Pork was amazing and some of the best, crunchiest crackling.

Fantastic Playgrounds for All Ages

There are several playground areas in Exhibition Park so there is something for all kids.

You have your traditional swings and slides for the little ones, including an amazing rustic wooden structure with a metal tube slide.

Table Tennis and Static Bikes for the Sporty Kids as well as Climbing Frames and Rope Walls for the more adventurous kids out there.

You will also find a small water play area (which when we last checked in April 2023, is fully working!).

Urban Green Cafe

Serving Hot and Cold food and locally sourced snacks Urban Green Cafe is a really great cafe in a really great setting.

Sandwiches, Toasties, Pastries and a Pizza menu there is something for everyone. I am particularly fond of the Ham and Pease Pudding Stottie.

Free Mini Train Rides

9 Reasons to Visit Exhibition Park

There is a free miniature railway (donations welcome) which runs on selected Sundays in the summer months just next to the Wylam Brewery building. It's fab and kids love it.

The train is organised by volunteers and free to ride - just turn up. Donations are welcome though so please dig deep. We all loved it and the trains are enjoyed by everyone from babies up to grandparents.

Wylam Brewery Food Battles

9 Reasons to Visit Exhibition Park

During the warmer months Wylam Brewery hosts food battles with several different vendors selling their best products and then the public votes for who was the best. The atmosphere at these events is always brill, it's free entry and kids and dogs are welcome too.

In the past we have been to the Battle of the Burgers where you can get everything from classic cheeseburgers, to deepfried chicken burgers to the most elaborate freak burgers.

Other Food Battles include:

Slice Wars

Mexican Stand Off

Argie Bhaji

Skate Park

Along with the Playgrounds Exhibition Park also has a Skate Park with everything a skater could want including a smooth transition section and a Street Section which has a funbox with hips, stair sets, hubbas and banks.

There are also two bowls which are linked together, a square bowl which has a spine and a level bottom for beginners and a rounder bowl with with vert extentions for those more advanced skaters.

Easy to get to by Car or Public Transport

As Exhibition Park is in the City Centre it is really easy to get to. It is just a 15 Minute walk from Haymarket Bus Station. It's just behind Great North Museum / next to the RVI.

If you are coming by car then Claremont Road Car Park is right next to the park and is fairly reasonable for a city centre car park at £1.60 an hour Monday to Saturday and £3 fixed price on Sunday (as of April 2023).

Lots of Events

Wylam Brewery is a regular gig venue but the park itself also hosts lots of events, including festivals, Park Runs and nature events. For a Full Calandar of events visit the Urban Green Website.
