Blyth to Seaton Sluice Pushchair Friendly Walk

I last completed this walk in January 2023 however it was a very dull and cloudy day. It's a local walk to me that I've enjoyed many times so I have used photos in this post from various visits over the years. Hope that's ok! As always, please check with venues direct for the most up to date info.

Blyth to Seaton Sluice Pushchair Friendly Walk

Why we like this walk

  • Around 1.5/2 miles each way (you can make it longer or shorted depending on how far you walk but Blyth Beach Playground - Seaton Sluice Playground is just over 1.5 miles). It is around 3.5 miles in total if you walk there and back and slightly more if you continue into Seaton Sluice to visit the pubs / cafes
  • The path is surfaced and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. It is a shared path with cyclists and ideal for kids to scoot / cycle
  • The path connects the two destinations and you can stick to the path the whole time or you can venture off over the dunes onto the beach
  • Seaton Sluice Beach is dog-friendly all year round
  • Parking is free at Blyth Beach / Seaton Sluice and there are bus stops nearby
  • There are public toilets at Blyth and Seaton Sluice
  • There are playgrounds at either end of this walk so it's ideal for tempting kids to try something longer than a mile. There are two playgrounds at Blyth Beach and one at Seaton Sluice
  • You'll find some lovely places to stop for drinks, ice cream or a bite to eat at either end (more on that later)

Looking for an alternative pushchair/wheelchair friendly coastal walk? How about these options?

I have popped together a free google map at the bottom of this post which shares the locations of all of the places mentioned or you can download a free copy straight to your phone using this link.

Blyth Beach

There is a free car park here (postcode NE24 3PL) - be warned it does get busy on hot summer days. The X8 and 308 buses stop close by (do check timetables before setting off) or it's around a 30 minute easy walk from Blyth Bus Station to Blyth Beach Huts (and you could stop off at Ridley Park en-route too).

Blyth Beach Huts

I'm a big fan of Blyth Beach although it's not dog-friendly all year round so do check if that's important to you. You can hire a beach hut for the day for £40 (details here) which is well worth doing.

Facilities at Blyth include:

In the warmer months there is usually an ice cream van / food vans and inflatable slides / bouncy castles for kids too.

You may notice some constuction work at the moment - new businesses are due to open here in October 2023 (so far a Co-op, Greggs, Chick Pizz and Hairdressers) which is brilliant news for the area.

If you just want a very short walk, the walk along the prom by the beach is lovely, fairly wide and surfaced / suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs with plenty of seating overlooking the benches.

My youngest son Jack loves fish and chips and declares the ones from Blyth to be the best ever. We visit every year for his birthday and I think this a tradition he will keep up for the rest of his life!

The Walk from Blyth Beach to Seaton Sluice

If you face the sea, turn right to walk towards Seaton Sluice. From the car park, choose the path at Blyth Battery that kind of walks through the dunes rather than the one that runs alongside the road (unless you want to walk alongside the road of course).

Path between Blyth Beach and Seaton Sluice

The path between Blyth and Seaton Sluice is called the 'Eve Black Way' and named in honour of a local councillor who was a strong advocate for this path (which was built in 2000). It is 1.5 miles in length.

There are a few benches along the route and bins too. It isn't completely flat but there are only a few very slight inclines - you should manage fine with a wheelchair.

The path is shared between walkers, dog walkers and cyclists so do keep an eye on dogs and children. Most of the cyclists we encounter here aren't going fast though and will slow / ring their bell when approaching walkers.

If you are looking for a somewhere to cycle / scoot with kids, I think this is one of the best, especially as there are playgrounds and ice cream / cake at either end.

You can stick to the path along the full route or there are sections where you can walk through the dunes and access the beach at various points too.

Seaton Sluice

There is free parking available at Seaton Sluice (use postcode NE26 4JY) and buses 308, 309 and X7 stop outside of the Astley Arms just next to the playground (do check current timetables before setting off).

Facilities at Seaton Sluice include:

Seaton Sluice beach is one of our favourites. It's dog friendly year round, usually quieter than nearby Whitley Bay and Blyth and nice and sandy with toilets and easy access.
