The Fun Shack Newcastle : Review & Deals

The Fun Shack actually has three venues across the North East - Newcastle, Stockton and Seaham. They boast some of the largest indoor adventure play areas in Europe and are brilliant fun. This post will focus on the Newcastle venue.

Fun Shack Newcastle - Location

Fun Shack Newcastle is located in Benfield Business Park just off Benfield Road outside of Newcastle City Centre. There is a free customer car park but it can get busy over peak times. Use postcode NE6 4NQ and follow the Fun Shack signs when you see them.

Alternatively, Walkergate Metro is just a short walk from the Fun Shack (see maps above and below).

Fun Shack Newcastle - What To Expect

The Fun Shack is HUGE. There is a large amount of seating surrounded by multiple play frames and activities. There is a secure entry system, lots of staff and a cafe too. Here are just some of the areas you can enjoy:

Four floors of tube tunnel slides, giant snake slides and climbing nets. Plus......

  • Go Karts: Test your speed on the miniature race track
  • Rubber Ring Slide: The North East's only indoor rubber dingy slide
  • Volcano Slide: A Climbing Wall with a difference
  • Cannonball Cove: A 12 Canon Pirate Ship Arena with canons, launch tubes ball blasters and more (please note, until restrictions allow, the balls have been removed from this area)
  • Football Court
  • Pirate Ninja Course - Perfect for Older Kids (follows a one way system around the obstacle course)
  • Toon Town - The Fun Shack's little role play village, perfect for little ones
  • Mini Cinema - Showing your kids' favourite movies
  • Dedicated Under 4s Play Area
  • Bumper Buddies - A 4 kart buggy arena
  • Triple Falls Slide - With 4 lanes so kids can race against each other
A couple of these require a small additional charge.

Fun Shack Newcastle : Review

Personally, I would not have taken my kids to Fun Shack to a main session when they were very little as I feel like there are better soft plays out there which are designed just for little ones.

I know this is personal preference though and loads of you do love taking your toddler here. I am one of those people who use softplay as a bit of a break though and as it is SO huge, I feel like I would always have to have my eyes on the kids and never be able to relax - I much preferred smaller soft plays when the kids were small.

I think this may be different at the toddler sessions though and if you have multiple aged kids, it might be ok if you can sit near the toddler area to watch your younger one as the older kids run off.

I think the ideal age for Fun Shack is 4-11 as there is loads for this age group to keep them entertained and they are more independent then. Fun Shack does allow children from birth - age 14 to visit and enjoy the equipment.

Here is my review from our last visit in 2019:

Today we visited
Fun Shack Newcastle
for the first time - there were 9 of us altogether and it worked well as there was plenty of seating.
I was actually really impressed with the Fun Shack:
🤩It was super clean (the cleanest soft play / activity centre I've been in I think).
🤩The Fun Shack was well supervised (the trampolines and the tyre slide were staffed to make sure everyone had a turn and chaos didn't break out).
🤩 There's no getting away from the fact that it's expensive. It's not somewhere I'd go every week due to the cost BUT as a special treat to meet up with friends in the holidays, it was really good value. The kids played for a full 2 hours and still weren't bored/complaining they wanted to go home - I don't think we've ever met up somewhere where this has happened for a full 2 hours in the past.
🤩It was really safe with a staffed AND locked entry and exit system
🤩 Like I say, there was so much to do, much more than a normal soft play. The kids were definitely well exercised! Heidi and Jack loved the trampolines, football court, tyre slide, pirate ship cannons and volcano slide the best. The Fun Shack mascot visited when we were there too and was posing for photos which was a nice touch. There's a baby area too.
Top Tip - We visited at 2pm today and it was busy but was a lot quieter after 3pm. I'd recommend visiting later in the day in the holidays if you're looking for a quieter visit (it does get a bit manic in there).
🤩 If you visit the Fun Shack and then visit one of their other sites (eg Inflataspace) on the same day, if you keep your receipt, you'll receive a 50% discount on the second place. Bargain! There are also term-time only toddler specials. (NB Please check out their FB page for offers to see if this deal is still running).
I was sceptical about Fun Shack and didn't know if it would be worth the money but it was only £3 more than our regular soft play but 100% worth it for a treat. We spent longer there than our regular soft play, the kids literally never stopped and loved it.
My only negative was I don't think adults should be charged £1 for entry to soft play 🤣 Definitely one to check out if you need somewhere for the kids to burn off some energy and you're looking for somewhere to catch up with your mam (or dad) friends though. H and J are already asking when we can go back.
Oh and one last thing - often these type of places can be FREEZING but it was lovely and warm in here today (without being too hot). It made all the difference to us having a nice experience there. And they serve decent coffee too.

What Measures Are We Putting In Place To Make Your Visit As Safe As Possible?

Here at Fun Shack the wellbeing of our Guests and Team Members is our first priority. We have therefore put in a number of measures in light of the Current Coronavirus (COVID-19) to make your visit with us as safe as possible.

Zoono Microbe Shield Surface sanitiser (Z71)

All play frame/ play activities and customer areas have been sprayed with Zoono Microbe Shield Surface sanitiser (Z71) by an expert specialist cleaning company. This Sanitising germ protection spray forms an antimicrobial coating on surfaces that protects against 99.99% of germs/viruses and keeps surfaces sanitised for up to 30 days. This product has been found to protect against Covid-19 and has been used on the London Underground system for hundreds of tube stations and buses, and is also used by the NHS. Zoono (Z71) will continue to work even after our routine cleaning procedures, and we will still be doing the additional daily cleaning measures (mentioned below) alongside using this product. This has been sprayed on all seating areas, bathrooms, high- frequency touch points, all play areas and arcade items. We will have the centre sprayed on a monthly basis with this product.

Please find some of the additional measures and procedures below:

  1. Temperature Checks

All customers will be temperature checked before being allowed into the centre. Staff will also be temperature checked at the start of every shift.

  1. Sanitising Stations

We have fixed sanitiser units at our receptions for customers to use before entering. We also have a number of sanitizing stations located around the centre, including all main play areas entrance/ exits to allow regular use during your visit.

  1. Reduced Capacity & Session Sizes

Session sizes (centre capacity) have been heavily reduced in accordance with government guidance and to allow circulation space in our centre allowing you to social distance. We have now also introduced arrival timeslots to help regulate customer arrival times.

  1. Additional Cleaning Measures

Increased daytime cleaning to sanitise all high-frequency touchpoints. Play & activity areas are also cleaned regularly throughout the day, alongside nightly cleaning.

All tables and chairs are cleaned after each customer use.

  1. Activity & Play Areas

Where appropriate in activity areas we have introduced marked routes & one-way systems to make it as safe as possible. We have also removed some high frequency touch points play elements such as ball pools so the play areas can be kept sanitised more easily.

  1. Book Online & Contactless Payments

We have introduced an online booking system on our website so you can Pre-book your visit with us online and scheduled your visit timeslot. We are also encouraging contactless payments in the centre whenever possible.

  1. Social Distancing

When you visit we have markings and signage to guide you and help you keep your distance from others. We have also ensured all seating areas are spaced to adhere to social distancing requirements.

  1. Face Coverings

Our staff will be wearing the appropriate PPE in accordance to government guidance and it is not a problem if you wish to wear a face covering when you visit our centre however, PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN.

Please note whilst we have tried to make your visit with us as safe as possible, you enter and use the facilities at your own risk.

Before You Visit:

In response to ensuring that all our customers and visitors are safe, we ask that everyone self-screens before entering the facility. This will ensure that we keep everyone safe and lessen the spread of the virus.

We ask you not to come to the centre if you or your family have:

  • Signs or a fever of high temperature (above 38c)
  • A persistent cough or respiratory problems
  • A loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell
  • Had contact with a possible source of the virus

If you have met any of the above criteria please do NOT visit the centre.

Fun Shack Newcastle - Cafe

I don't have an up-to-date menu but this one from a few years ago should give you an idea of the kind of things on offer / price points:

Fun Shack Newcastle - Nearby

Directly behind Fun Shack Newcastle you will find Clip n Climb Newcastle (which is fab and open now), InflateSpace Newcastle (the UK's largest indoor inflatable arena) which also reopens on 17 May and the epic SpaceRider which is the longest indoor zipcoaster. These are all in the same building alongside several arcades and a cafe.

I can't see any offers at the moment but these group of attractions often run a buy one get 50% off another deal if you visit both on the same day - worth looking out for over the next few months.
