Planning Our Holiday to Kos from Newcastle

We're off to Kos for our summer holidays this year. This post shares a few of our plans - let me know if you have any other recommendations for us.

Why Kos Town? 

Our adult child and older teen are doing their own thing this summer so this holiday was planned for  myself, Steve and 15 year old Jack. The three of us visited Athens a few years ago and really enjoyed Greece and were keen to go back. 

Kos ticked a lot of boxes - direct flights from Newcastle, historical sites, nice sunsets, lots of teen friendly activities.

Accommodation 

There's lots of accommodation to choose from in Kos and various resorts to choose from (have a little browse of what's on offer here). 

We settled on the Peredis Family Resort. It's officially 5* (although I don't think it's 5* compared to say Turkey or Mexico) but I was drawn to this hotel as it is family-run with loads of 5* reviews and happy, returning customers.

What stood out for me was that many people mentioned how friendly and helpful the staff and owners were and that they do eveything to ensure you have a nice stay and show proper Greek hospitality and that the hotel is always absolutely immaculate. To me, this is more important than somewhere looking aesthetically pleasing. 

We booked a suite which includes 2 small double beds, 2 sofa beds, a living area, kitchen, bathroom, air con and balcony / terrace which is more than enough space for the three of us. 

A range of board options are available and for this trip we wanted to try lots of restaurants and knew we woudn't be drinking loads so opted for self catering. We booked around a year ago and it was £2500 with a free child place for 3 of us for a week in August booked with Jet2 Holidays. We were fully flexible with dates and mid-August worked out the cheapest time to travel. 

Why I Booked This Hotel: 

• Family run with excellent service and reviews 
• Nice pool areas and loungers 
• You can order drinks and snacks direct to your lounger with an app / QR code 
• There's a Spa 
• Adult only rooftop area 
• A highly rated Greek night 
• Larger room sizes 
• 8 minute walk to the marina / 20 minute walk to the Old Town 

Breakfast / Bunch Options in Kos Town

The brunch options in Kos look fantastic! I reckon it will mostly be just myself and Steve going out for brunch as Jack likes to sleep in (we will make sure the cupboards are stocked for him). Here are a few places which have caught my eye: 

Plus Coffee is next door to our hotel and serves proper Greek coffee and a range of fresh pastries. Think we will head here on our first morning before we get our bearings. They also serve crepes and open at 5:30am so I'll be popping here for an early morning coffee if I wake up early.  

C. Food & Mood offers beautiful sea views and is a short walk from our hotel. Their brunch menu offers yoghurt bowls, lots of egg dishes and pancakes 

Fresh Yoghurt & More for a huge selection of Greek Yoghurt Bowls 

Ritual Art of Roasting is said to be the best coffee on the island and their pastry counter looks lush 

Our hotel does offer breakfast too but its 18e per person and buffet style - not really what we're looking for on this trip 

Plantanos is another restaurant with beautiful views and both their Peach Croissant with Mascarpone Cream and French Toast with Local Thyme Honey have caught my eye 

Activities in Kos Town 

Some of the activities I researched for adults / adults with teens: 

• Open Air Cinema Under the Stars with Cocktails & Popcorn
  
  
• Spa Treatments - I don't know why but we never booked spa treatments on holiday when the kids were little despite us being able to (one of us is more than capable of watching 3 kids at a time). Probably felt too guilty! However I lost that guilt when my kids entered their teenage years and now Steve and I always book a few spa treatments on holiday. It feels like SUCH a treat.
  
  Our hotel offers a Zen Therapy package which inclides a 60 minute massage with herbal compresses filled with lavendar, chamomile and mediterranean herbs, a 75 minute luxury facial and infusion followed by a 60 minute luxury foot spa ritual and 20 minutes in the sauna for 160 euros which is indulgent but sounds like heaven. I'm hoping to book this. 
  
  
• Malena Greek Island Hopping Boat Trip - There are loads of boat trips to choose from. I picked this one as you can book your own lounger in your preferred location on the boat, either in the sun / shade. And it has an enclosed air conditioned bar with decent drinks and ice cream. There are larger (and cheaper) pirate boat trips but these seem very busy, don't offer your own lounger for the day and offer limited shade which is a must for us gingers  
  
  
• Tuk Tuk Island Tours - v cheap at $40 for 3 of us for an hour tour around some of the sites 
  
  
• Greek Museum of Archaeology 
  
  
• Sunset Trips to Zia 
  
  
• Greek Wine Tasting (this is very close to our hotel)
  
  
• The Hippocrates Tree
  
  
• Kos Island Tour with Honey Tasting 
  
  
• Shopping in the Old Town / Muncipal Market

• Lido Water Park 

Kos Town Restaurants 

I have my eye on a few restaurants : 

• Greek night at our hotel - lots of reviews mention this is fantastic with traditional Greek food served around the pool, Greek music & dancing.
  
  
• Lampros Steak House - Jack loves a steakhouse on holiday and this one looks fancy. You get to choose your own salt 
  
  
• Okeanos Seafood Restaurant - this one is right by the sea and their menu is packed with local seafood dishes. Perfect! 
  
  
• Barolo Wine Bar - just a 6 minute walk from our hotel, they have a sea view cocktail lounge with a pianist in the evening and then a stylish Italian restaurant set back a little. 
  
  
• Lofaki - A stunning sunset restaurant in the mountains. It's a small family business and the owner can organise taxi transfers for you when you book 
  
  
• Mom's Kitchen - this is a highly rated taverna serving Greek food and might be a nice option for lunch 
  
  
• Kaiki Snack Bar - When we island hop, this bar on Kalymos looks nice and their fried Greek cheese with a glass of local wine whilst overlooking the harbour is recommended by many 
  
  
• Oromedon is the place to be for the best Greek food and views in Zia
