Our Review

I went along with my 17 year old daughter Dee - we were both Contemporary Dance newbies but looking forward to trying something new.

The show features three pieces - two in the first act and one in the final act. There is also a mini interval between the first two pieces where the curtain falls but the lights stay low. The evening flies by and is well paced. If you can pick up a programme, this one is worth it and one of the fancier programmes I've ever received (plus it comes with a poster and is packed with info).

Onto the show and the first piece, In Crimson, did leave us feeling a little bewildered. It's packed with drama and feels intimate sharing lots of strong emotions but we both agreed we didn't fully grasp what was going on. At one point the dancers were behaving like Gorillas and then another they were wowing us with their composure with ballet. It was still an enjoyable watch but I feel if you know more about dance than we do, you will get more from this performance.

I did enjoy that it was partially set to piano music and a live singer.

However the second piece, HOP(E)STORM is something I instantly connected with. It features traditional (and less traditional) Lindy Hop movements set to rave music. You could literally feel the energy, joy and freedom radiating from the stage and it was invigorating to watch.

The music, lighting and dance all came together beautifully and I would honestly go and watch This is Rambert just to see this perfomance again. The joy on stage was infectious.

And the final piece, Gallery of Consequence, was something completely different again but just a enjoyable to watch.

The large scale collaborative piece is loosely based in an airport and shares various scenarios the audience will be familiar with - checking in, being told your luggage is too heavy, feeling stressed, mundane work chat with colleagues during a quiet moment, bumping into a stranger and feeling an instant connection, arguing with your partner.....

It was so clever and I cannot imagine how long it took to put this piece together as there was so much going on but everyone was so in sync.

This piece was my daughter's favourite and really focussed on human connection. It was funny in places. The sound and lighting used were brilliant and it's the kind of piece you could watch again and again and get something different from it each time. The storytelling was completely on point for me and it was easy for me to follow along and super entertaining.

This was a bit of a different night out for myself and my daughter but we had a brilliant time with loads to chat about on the Metro home. I'm no dance expert but you really can tell you are watching something that's of an extremely high calibre.
