We parked in the Bay Horse pub (make sure you pop in for a drink or food - they run lots of special offers), crossed over the road and headed under the underpass which goes under the A189.

The walk is fairly muddy - definitely one for walking books or wellies. I wouldn't really recommend taking a pushchair along this route as it is narrow in parts, a little uneven and muddy.

The route is fairly short though (5 minutes each way) and it is short enough for toddlers to walk or to wear a baby carrier with little ones. We spotted a couple of dog walkers so bring your dog too.

It is impossible to get lost - there is one clear path and it is easy to follow. You will spot Cramlington Hospital on your left and at this point, you should be able to spot the Giant Spoon along the path in the distance.

We found it! The Giant Spoon is actually called Eat For England - a 15 ft Giant Spoon which was commissioned in 2006 as part of a National Lottery funded art trail. Its creator, Bob Budd believes that a place where food is created (it is in between two farmers fields) is the best place for a spoon.

We made up our own story though and if you visit with children, it could be fun to do the same. Our theory is that one day, a giant was eating his cereal in the clouds and dropped his spoon.

He leaned over to try and retrieve it but ended up falling from the sky! He landed in the pond at Alnwick Garden and has lived there ever since.

His wife tried to help him one day but the same fate awaited her. She fell into the Earth and turned into Northumberlandia. Oh dear! The moral of the story is, do not drop your spoon when eating your cereal!

You walk right under the Newcastle Airport flight path and we were wowed at how close an Emirates plane flew above our heads as we walked back through the woodland area. Perfect if you know a little one who loves spotting planes.

If you would like a longer walk, continue along the path and you will end up in Seaton Delaval. Rumour has it that there is another sculpture further along the track - a figure that you can stand in. Let me know if you have seen him/her.

The walk only takes around 20 minutes in total. If you have parked in the Bay Horse Car Park, it is only courteous that you pop in for a drink or a bite to eat. Their menus are super cheap and there is always a bargain to be had (including kids eat for £1 at certain times). Read our review from a few years ago here and check out their current offers here and see their kids menu here.
