What's On in the North East for Kids & Families | 9 & 10 September 2017

A lot of us will have kids who headed back to school this week and it certainly feels as if Autumn has just popped up out of nowhere. The trees around us are already turning brown and shedding their leaves! Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year and I can't wait for a season full of long walks and outdoor fun. Here are a few ideas for the weekend ahead.....

7 - 10 September | Heritage Open Days | Across the North East - FREE event

Every September 5000 volunteers organise 11,000 events celebrating our history and culture. Heritage Open Days are FREE to attend and a fantastic way to visit somewhere new. There are lots of options in the North East across the weekend including free entry to many National Trust properties, Tanfield Railway tours and behind the scenes at the Discovery Museum. So many places are taking part including the Grainger Market, Newcastle Castle, Durham Cathedral, Northern Stage, Ouseburn Farm, Seven Stories, Tyneside Theatre, Theatre Royal, Tyne Theatre & Opera House, the Rising Sun and more. In fact there are 362 events taking place across the North East. Find out more details here.

9 September | Junior & Mini Great North Run

The Junior & Great North Runs are both now full. If you have a place, good luck! Here's all the info you need.

9 September | Toddle Truck Tours | Great North Museum - FREE event

Take a 20 minute toddle truck tour around the museum and find the 6 items asked for using your special magnifying glass. There are several sessions throughout the day, some need to be pre-booked and some are drop-in. Find out more here

Don't miss out, sign up to our FREE weekly newsletter featuring What's On across the North East for the weekend ahead here.

9 September | Young Curators Taster Day | Durham Cathedral - FREE event

Young people aged 11-16 can discover what it's like to work behind the scenes, how to handle objects and help the Cathedral develop their children's activities. Sessions are free but need to be pre-booked. Find out more here

9 September | Frankenstein | Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Something for older children and teens (my three are obsessed with Frankenstein), this special performance takes place with the audience sitting on stage so places are limited.  Find out more here

9 September | Under 5s Music Making | The Sage

Join the Sage's friendly musicians and make some music in the Gregg's Children's Room. Tickets should be pre-booked and sessions last around 1 hour. Find out more here

10 September | Great North Run

The GNR is now closed to applications but it's a fantastic event to support with a lovely family atmosphere. You can stand on one of the bridges on Central Motorway and watch the runners pass beneath you, head to the Tyne Bridge area where you might catch the red arrows, South Shields for the big finale or check out the route here for other places to catch some of the action.

10 September | Bands at Belsay | Belsay Hall

Bring along your deckchairs and rugs and at 2pm enjoy some live music that will be played outside the magnificent setting of Belsay Hall. Free event for English Heritage members, admission charges apply for non-members. Find out more here
