Whitley Bay beach and Free Pizza

I am lucky that some of my closest friends had children around the same time as I had my youngest son. It is lovely to always have someone to meet at the park or to play with at toddler group and soft play. These days are sadly now behind us (sob) as our children are now aged 4 or 5 and attend school or nursery. It is so hard to get everyone together so we do try and make an effort during the holidays.

I noticed a deal on Michelino's Facebook page that looked too good to refuse. During Happy Hour there is 20% off food and kids eat free. I promptly booked a table for the 10 of us. Happy Hour is available between 12noon-2pm and 5pm-6:30pm Monday-Friday. One child up to the age of 12 eats free per adult. Children can choose any pizza or pasta and they are the same size as an adult portion so this worked out to be extremely good value.

Management of this offer does seem a little haphazard - when I first phoned to book I was told they didn't open over lunch (and had to wait for a manager to call me back) and when we were given our bill the children's meals hadn't been taken off (this was easily rectified). There was about a 45 minute wait for food as well which wasn't ideal (especially as we were the only ones there). Our children were thankfully happy enough though and we were given some freshly baked bread to tide us over.

Hopefully these are all just teething problems as Michelino's gets to grips with their new deals. Our pizzas were handmade, authentic and delicious and at less than £8 per mum and child including drinks it was a real bargain! I will definitely be booking again.

After lunch it was time to cross over the road and take a walk along the beach. It was a mild day and our boys could spend forever identifying rocks, throwing stones into the sea and running from the waves. It was lovely to hear them all laughing together.

We had the best time at the beach and I think it shows in their little faces! At only £4 per person for pizza and a drink followed by unlimited fun at the beach it certainly was a very budget friendly but very enjoyable way to catch up with friends.

Children's afternoon tea at The Running Fox, Felton

The Running Fox is our go-to place for a treat in the school holidays. Reasonably priced and delicious, it is somewhere the whole family enjoys. We paid a visit for breakfast during the Christmas holidays and in February half term decided to try out their children's afternoon tea. We have all enjoyed afternoon tea before (back in 2013) but had not tried their new children's menu so decided to book up on the first day of our holidays. Booking is definitely advised - we visited on a cold Monday afternoon and watched four families being turned away.

Children's Afternoon Tea

Children's Afternoon tea is priced at £5.95 per child. For this they will receive a freshly made sandwich of their choice, a bag of crisps and a scone or cake plus unlimited juice. Our children LOVE cake and were very pleased with the gigantic slices they were served. I liked how afternoon tea for children was served on a tea stand just like the grown up version. The ham and cheese were of very good quality too and the bread was freshly baked and soft. Perfect!

Afternoon Tea for Grown Ups

Grandma joined us for afternoon tea and we ordered traditional afternoon tea for £10 each. For this you can choose any sandwich from the menu, a slice of homemade quiche or pie (we ordered one of each and shared), a cream scone and any cake from the counter plus unlimited tea or coffee. I found this to be exceptional value for money. All of the food is freshly baked on site and tastes absolutely amazing. We would say that there is far too much though and we felt a bit sick after we over indulged! The staff are happy to box up anything you don't eat to take home.

You absolutely cannot fault the food at The Running Fox - the staff do seem a little too busy at times though and we needed to catch their attention a few times to ask for our drinks to be re-filled. This and the fact that you are only given one plate (we had to cover ours with napkins after eating our pie in order to eat our scone and cake) are only minor niggles and I am being picky. I'm sure if I had managed to catch a member of staff's attention they would have given us an extra plate if we'd asked.

Feeding the ducks

A trip to Felton would not be complete without feeding the friendly ducks on the river outside. There is a bucket full of stale bread by the door of The Running Fox for children to help themselves to which is a lovely touch. The ducks in Felton are always happy to see you and we found their chatter to be hilarious.

Super excited with their free duck bread!

Our total bill for two adults and three children was £38 (including duck bread) We brought our leftovers home for supper so this worked out to be very good value for us.

The Running Fox is a bakery and you can buy fresh bread, cakes, pies and quiches from their counter. We are hoping the visit Warkworth Castle over Easter and will definitely be popping in the fill our picnic basket up with treats en-route.

Blackfriars - more than just a restaurant

Blackfriars is a 13th Century building in the heart of Newcastle. Hidden away between The Gate and Newcastle's famous Stowell street, the historic building stands proud in it's own quiet spot and provides a tranquil space of calm away from the bright lights of the city.

Blackfriars stays true to it's roots and has been furnished in Medieval style. As you step through the doors you are greeted with carved wooden chairs, oversized candle's lighting the room and scripts adorning the exposed stone walls. Every little touch sets the mood and you feel as if you have truly stepped back in time.

Blackfriars make the most of their history and offer a calendar of unique events including seasonal Medieval banquets where you are encouraged to dress up to feast on pies and pottage served with flagons of ale by the town wenches and monks or maybe you would prefer a Medieval lecture complete with a traditional 3 course lunch? Children aren't forgotten either and are invited to try their hand at cooking and baking at Little Monks Cookery Club. Suitable for 7-16 year olds, your 'little Monks' will learn how to cook family meals and treats at their own pace in a relaxed and friendly environment. These courses are available every half term but booking in advance is recommended as they are very popular.

Blackfriars can also offer a unique place for a christening, wedding or party with the option to exclusively hire their Medieval banquet hall. Featuring ornate chandeliers, wall hangings, stained glass windows and hand crafted chairs and dining areas, I imagine a private gathering at Blackfriars would certainly have the WOW factor. In the Summer months the outdoor space can also be utilised and the grassed area is a perfect place for little ones to run around and let off steam.

Food

Back to the main reason for our visit - the food! Blackfriars was opened in 2001 by Sam and Andy Hook who after successfully running Sidney's in nearby Tynemouth could not resist the opportunity. The restaurant has gone from strength to strength and has won a string of awards including the Taste of England Award 2013 and was voted as the Top place for Sunday Lunch in Newcastle by the Independent in 2013. There are a selection of menus to choose from and something for every taste and budget. We opted for the Set menu which is available for lunch or an early weekday dinner. £15 for two courses or £18 for 3 courses looked like it would provide exceptional value.

We received a friendly welcome as we stepped into the restaurant and noticed it was busy with a mix of couples, groups and families enjoying themselves. The restaurant is warm and authentic and definitely a place you can sit back and relax. The first thing to grab my attention were these fabulous salt and pepper pots on every table. I love the attention to detail!

My dining companion was an old friend and we had lots to catch up on - the staff perfectly judged this and although they checked back when necessary, they mostly left us to enjoy our food and wine which was perfect. We ordered our food and were brought out some homemade bread and butter (extra points for passing my butter test) while we waited for our drinks and starters.

Starter - Crispy Pigs cheek, spiced date puree, apple and crackling salad

Starter - Spiced Parsnip and Jerusalem Artichoke soup

We were both extremely impressed with our starters. The presentation of both dishes was beautiful and the flavour matched too. The seasoning was spot on and both dishes were absolutely perfect for Winter - full of homely flavours leaving us with a warm glow. I loved how our server asked if I would like some extra bread with my soup too. Again, fantastic attention to detail.

Main Course - Slow-roasted belly pork, Colcannon mash, crackling and cider jus

Main Course - North Sea fish and shellfish pie, buttered broccoli and peas

There was about a 10-15 minute wait between courses which was perfect for us. I ordered the belly pork and it was the best I have ever tasted - the meat was extremely succulent and simply melted in the mouth whereas the skin was lovely and crispy and there was plenty of it too. My friend's fish pie was also a hit and every bite was full of lots of lovely local fish and seafood.

Dessert - Baked passionfruit cheesecake, passionfruit sorbet

Dessert - Caramel pear tart, hazelnut crumb, milk ice-cream

We still had about half a bottle of wine left so decided we could just about squeeze in some desserts. My cheesecake was beautifully presented and lovely and zingy - ending my meal perfectly. My friend's tart was equally as good and the flavour combinations and textures worked perfectly together.

There was absolutely no rush for us to leave and the table was ours for the evening. We were asked if we would like coffees and then left to enjoy the last of our wine in peace.

I think you'll agree, 3 courses for £18 was a real bargain. The food was locally sourced, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and plentiful. Next time you are looking for somewhere a bit different to dine in Newcastle, I would certainly consider Blackfriars.

Children are of course welcome at Blackfriars with a new menu being launched soon. At the moment, smaller portions from the main menu are available with sausage and mash and fish and chips being firm favourites. Children are given a free colouring sheet and Medieval fact sheet (my 8 year old would LOVE this) and this half term they'll be given a free homemade ice cream to enjoy when dining with an adult who buys a main course.

Blackfriars also offer children's birthday party packages (click here to download more information) in which children get the chance to bake with their friends followed by lunch or tea.

We received a complimentary meal for the purpose of this review and some of the photographs have been kindly provided by Blackfriars. As always, our review is completely honest and all thoughts are our own. I can't wait to return with hubby and it will definitely become a favourite spot for lunch in the coming months.

Pancake day recipes and tips from Newcastle's Pancake Experts | La Petite Creperie

I'll be the first to admit I am rubbish at making pancakes. Yes, I am the mum that resorts to a packet mix...for pancakes! This year however, I have been provided with some traditional crepe recipes from the lovely people at La Petite Creperie who can be found serving up authentic pancakes every day at their stall in the Grainger market. They have also kindly shared some top tips to make sure your pancakes at home taste delicious too.

If making your own is too much hassle, make sure you pop into The Grainger Market in Newcastle and visit La Petite Creperie for an authentic taste of France. Crepes and Galettes can be made to order or pre-ordered via lpcreperie@outlook.com (12 crepes for £10 is a fantastic deal and perfect for an office lunch).

Crêpe mix with brut ‎cider

For 15-18 crêpes :
  • 250g plain flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 250ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 300ml brut cider
  • 30g semi salted butter
In a large mixing bowl, put the flour and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle and start whisking from the centre, slowly drawing the flour into the eggs. Pour in the cider and beat until you get a thick paste.
In the meantime, in a separate pan, boil the milk with the butter. Add it to the other mix and leave it to rest for 30mn before using it to make crepes in a hot pan.

Buckwheat galettes mix (gluten free)

For 15-18 galettes :
  • 330g buckwheat flour
  • 15g sea salt
  • 750ml water
  • 1 egg
Mix the flour with the salt. Make a well and add the egg. Pour gradually the water while whisking vigorously. Leave the mix to rest for 2 hours before using to make galettes in a hot pan.

Tip: it is even better when made the day before!

TIPS : Tasty variations

Depending on the region you live in France, people will finalise the batter with a personal touch, to make it tastier.
  • ‎In Brittany, we will add a shot of brut cider or even chouchen (a form of mead)
  • In Normandy, ‎locals will put a shot of calvados (apple brandy) in their batter
  • In the North east and Alsace, people will add beer!
  • While in the south, we will put rum or pastis (anise spirit)!
  • At last, it is not all about alcohol though, as it is always a good move to add honey or vanilla extract...

I would love to hear your top tips and see your photographs of your finished pancakes. You can tweet me your photos at  @nefamilyfun and make sure you share them with @LPCreperie too.

Thank you to La Petite Creperie for sharing these recipes, tips and photographs.

5 foodie facts I did not expect from DFDS Seaways

If you live in the North East you will no doubt have noticed the huge DFDS Seaways Ferries at the Port of the Tyne where they depart daily for Amsterdam. As a passenger there are lots of options to climb aboard including booking one way (which is often cheaper than flying and means you can take your car) or enjoying one of the popular 2 night mini cruises.

I have often considered booking a mini cruise for myself but have to admit I have been put off as I imagined extortionate prices, boozed up brits and microwaved food - none of which is my cup of tea. So when we were invited aboard KING SEAWAYS this week to spend the afternoon with the ship's head chef and bar manager I was not exactly sure what to expect. I have to say though, my eyes were truly opened as we were invited to cook our own lunch alongside the chef in the ship's kitchen, make cocktails with the experienced bar team and ask the staff any burning questions we wanted answering. Here are five facts I was thrilled to discover whilst on board:-

They have a dedicated baker on board

The baker starts work at 1am every day to ensure everybody has fresh bread for breakfast and then again for dinner in the evening. I expected all of the bread to be bought in so this is very impressive. You can't beat fresh bread! We made our own and sampled some with our lunch and it was delicious.

A Passionate Head Chef

Their head chef is passionate and designs the menu himself. Brian has worked for DFDS Seaways for over 15 years and it is lovely to hear him still talk with passion - he clearly enjoys his job and managing his team of 18 on board. He works a shift pattern of 14 days on, 14 days off and as he changes the restaurant menus every 3 months, there is always something new to discover and try.

Here I am being put through my paces in the ship's kitchen and learning to make trout mousse.

Fine Dining is an Option

There is of course a buffet restaurant on board. Featuring over 80 freshly cooked dishes from around the world - all tastes are catered for. There are however a number of fine dining options available too. The Blue Riband restaurant serves elegant and contemporary cuisine such as veal carpaccio with aioli and black pepper and butter fried fillets of seabass. The Explorer's Steakhouse offers families a lovely dining option too. With only the best aged steaks sourced from the USA (that have never been frozen), it is the ship's go-to restaurant for steak-lovers. We sampled the steak whilst on board and I have to say it was spot on.

^I made this^ (with a little help)

Prices are not as expensive as you'd think

I had it in my mind that DFDS have you trapped on their ship so are going to charge extortionate prices - I was pleasantly surprised to find this wasn't the case. The Blue Ribband a la carte restaurant is just over £30 for three courses if booked in advance and a table at the ship's all you can eat buffet including half a bottle of wine (not just house - there are four varieties to choose from) is only £27.99. It's also nice to see that under 3's eat free.

A variety of Cocktails and wine tasting classes are available

There are 7 bars aboard KING SEAWAYS and they all offer something different. Whether it be watching the sun set over the sea with al fresco drinks in the Sky bar, enjoying live entertainment in the Columbus bar or simply sitting back to relax with friends and family - there is an area for everyone to enjoy. For something a bit different, there is even the chance to pre-book a wine, beer and whiskey tasting session for your trip back from Holland. This is something that I would definitely book and try.

So overall, I was very impressed. My perception has been completely changed. A la carte fine dining, gourmet steaks, wine tasting and al fresco cocktails. Seriously - what's not to love? If I can somehow persuade the grandparents to take our children for 3 days, there will be nothing stopping me booking a mini cruise for myself and hubby now. I was also pleased to see that there are now refurbished 5 birth cabins available too and therefore taking the children on a weekend break to Amsterdam could also be an option.

Thanks to DFDS Seaways for a wonderful day aboard.

Cafe 21, Newcastle - A review

Cafe 21 has a reputation as being one of the best restaurants in Newcastle. Modern, sophisticated and buzzing with activity it is certainly somewhere to visit for a special occasion or to impress. Cafe 21 adhere's to the concept of simple food that is not overly fussy but is big on flavour. If you want high quality food presented in a classic and clean style, Cafe 21 is the place for you.

High quality ingredients do come at a cost and some of the starters on cafe 21's menu cost upwards of £15 and their main courses are in the region of £18-22 with sides charged as extra plus you have to consider the 10% service charge that will be added to your bill. I do believe you get what you pay for though and if I had more disposable income, there's no question Cafe 21 is one of the places I would spend it. If like me you have a budget to consider, Cafe 21 do offer a more purse-friendly early evening special (Monday-Saturday 5:30pm-7pm) which is priced at £18.50 for 2 courses or 3 courses for £22. This menu is decent and certainly something I will return and try. I imagine it is of a quite similar standard to their restaurant week menu we tried a few weeks ago.

Restaurant week is a fantastic time to try new restaurant's or old favourites and Cafe 21's menu looked impressive. 3 courses for £20 was exceptional value when you consider this included both smoked salmon and seabass which are fairly expensive ingredients. I was joined for the evening by my friend and fellow blogger Shivani (check out Cloud in a teacup for gorgeous photography) and our friend Paula who we've both worked with before on various blogging missions but never actually met in real life. Cafe 21 is a fabulous place to meet up with friends - the service is professional and un-intrusive meaning there will be no awkward moments or interruptions of important conversations. The ambience is buzzy and exciting - it feels like there's lots going on and you're part of it! Plus the music is pitched at just the right level so you don't need to shout to be heard.

Here's what I ordered:-

Smoked Salmon Croquettes with Lemon Mayonnaise

Fillets of Seabass with French Beans and Almonds

Cinnamon Doughnuts with Spiced Custard and Chocolate Sauce

My food was beautifully cooked and well presented. My only criticism would be was that the portions were on the slightly small side, especially my croquettes. However what lacked in portion size was certainly made up for in flavour. I've never tried Seabass with almonds before but loved it and my doughnuts were most definitely something I would recommend and re-order. Shivani ordered a cheese souffle for her starter and I had severe souffle envy! Her portion was huge! I think souffles are kind of a signature dish of Cafe 21 and I am definitely going to order one on my next visit.

As I discussed with the girls on the evening - I always think a good indicator of a restaurant is how spreadable their butter is. There is nothing worse than sitting down to your table, noticing their is a lovely basket of bread for you and then not being able to spread it with butter as it's too hard! I always think I'm going to have a good evening if somewhere has taken the time to ensure their butter is at room temperature before it's placed on the table. I am pleased to say, Cafe 21 passed the butter test. I predicted we were going to have a good night and we certainly did.

New restaurants come and go but Cafe 21 has been serving fantastic food in the heart of the city for a good few years now and still has a reputation as being one of the best. I'm pleased to say that based on my experience this is an accolade they deserve and if you're looking for somewhere to catch with friends, Cafe 21 would be a great option. Don't expect fancy techniques and the latest gimmicks but do expect high quality food that is beautifully and simply presented and served by a lovely and experienced team who know what they're doing. You'll always be well looked after at Cafe 21.
