Try the FREE Zog Trail at Kielder Forest

A new Zog Trail is launching at Kielder Forest this weekend (11 January). Perfect for little legs, this magical trail runs through the forest and promises the chance to discover lots of characters from the popular Julia Donaldson tale.

Starting at Kielder Castle, follow the panels and complete the activities as you walk along. Uncover hidden signs, collect stars just like Zog did at Dragon School and complete challenges as you go.

All you need to know:
  • The trail is free to complete - you'll find the first Zog panel just outside of Kielder Castle.
  • The route is likely to follow the same trail as The Highway Rat which was between 1.5miles and 2 miles long. If you're slow-ish walkers and try each activity, it should last around 90 minutes. Pack snacks and drinks. It's easy to follow and difficult to get lost. There's lots to keep little ones entertained along the way
  • As well as Zog, you'll find lots of Julia Donaldson characters along the way including the Gruffalo and the Gruffalo's Child.
  • The full route is not fully accessible but you can complete the first part (and get to see the Gruffalo) with a pushchair. An all-terrain one would be best and it's hilly! Personally, I'd take a baby carrier or sling or visit the trail at Hamsterley Forest instead which is much more accessible and completely flat.
  • There is a small cafe on-site selling light bites/drinks and a Zog trail bag is available from The Bike Place near the car park for £3. Trail bags include a special lens to reveal hidden pictures along the way, a Zog mask, a booklet and pencil to complete activities along the way. You can check the cafe opening times here.
  • Parking is £5 per day and can be used across all car parks in Kielder. The postcode is NE48 1ER - follow signs for Kielder Castle.

Freckled mum of 2 has tried the Zog Trail at Guisborough, you can read all about it here.

We're hoping to complete the Zog Trail at the end of this month. I can't wait - it's a lush way to explore Kielder Forest with the family. I will update this post with lots more photos and info when we do. Let me know if you fancy trying it.

  1. Aw - we did a Gruffalo trail, a few years ago. The kids really enjoyed it. We'll have to look out for a Zog trail near us....
