Puffin Crafts Amble | A Review

Thanks to our writer Bethanie for this post.

A great rainy day in Northumberland activity, Puffin Crafts Amble is an independent craft shop and Making Space. It is a light and calm space where you can enjoy painting and crafting.

Not just to be saved for a rainy day however, you can have birthday parties here or meet up with family for a fun hour and a half of painting. The shop space has been well thought out and accessible for all visitors. Read on to find out more about what to expect from your visit.....

5 Reasons to Book Puffin Crafts

  1. Easy and free on-site parking / accessible by public transport (bus to Amble)
  2. Low-cost set prices - £3 per person to use paints / glue and then each item is priced individually from £2
  3. A place to get creative with not worrying about getting paint on your sofa
  4. Ideal for all ages from toddlers up to grandparents
  5. Easy to book ahead online and a good rainy day idea for Northumberland

Where is Puffin Crafts?

Puffin Crafts is located in the vibrant harbour village of Amble, Northumberland. The best part is the shop is located out of the village’s main shopping street and harbour, so you can easily get parked (on site parking is free).

Puffin Crafts Amble | A Review - location

Use postcode: NE65 0NB and head towards the Londis Esso garage just in front of the Castle Mania soft play. Puffin Crafts is clearly signed from the outside and is right next to the garage.

Who is it suitable for?

We visited with our three children who are aged 9, 5 and 1 and they were all able to join in and had something to take home. There is obviously no age limit to who can join in with the painting and there is space for a wheelchair, you just need to specify you need this space when making a booking.

Upon entering the shop, we were warmly welcomed by the owner Alison. We were immediately blown away by how much choice there was.

Puffin Crafts Amble | A Review

Not only can you choose to paint ceramics, from small animals to larger money boxes and ornaments, but there is also the choice to paint birch wood shapes, bunting or door hangers.

I particularly loved this as I didn’t have to worry about what my 1 year old would do. I chose her a birch wood rabbit and sailing boat, which she very happily painted for a short time whilst sat in a highchair.

You can be as creative as you like, which was also a big hit. For example, if you are painting a door sign, you can really personalise it by sticking on small wooden letters, animals, sea creatures etc.

My mum came with us and created a lovely sign for her summer house with a puffin and letters added on once painted. Often when you go pottery painting it is just the ceramic figures to choose from, but at Puffin Crafts you can really be as creative and imaginative as you like.

To paint in the Making Space, costs £3 per person for use of the paints, brushes and glitter glue, plus the cost of what it is you choose to paint. This was all very reasonably priced and ranged from under £2 up to £8 for the larger ceramics.

For those of you who hate the thought of crafting and painting at home, this is perfect because all the mess is cleared up for you at the end!

While aprons are provided, you are advised to wear old clothes as the acrylic paint does stain.

The acrylic paint you use is fast drying and doesn’t require a kiln, so once you have finished your crafting you are ready to take your creations home in the handy boxes provided.

Do I need to book?

Walk ins are accepted but because of the space I recommend booking a slot to avoid disappointment, as the spaces are filled on a first come for served basis.

There are three tables which comfortably seat four people around each one. As I mentioned previously there is also a highchair available if needed.

You can make bookings online or send a message to Puffin Crafts. Bookings are via the website: https://www.puffincraftsamble.co.uk/products/book-a-table-in-our-making-space or follow Puffin Crafts on Facebook and Instagram.

Are refreshments available?

No there aren’t the facilities for serving refreshments, but what people seem to like to do is head next door to the CIRCA CafĂ©, where they sell a delicious range of hot and cold drinks as well cakes and light snacks. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks for the children.

A lovely idea is you can book a birthday party here. Everything is organised for you; all you need to bring is the cake. I think this would be a lovely alternative for a birthday party, something a bit different and special.

The shop sells a range of craft materials which can also be viewed online. It really is a gem of a place and a very relaxing, enjoyable space.

Bookings are being taken for the May half term and Summer holidays so I would book your time slot (max an hour and a half) in plenty of time. You can book the day before you plan to visit and the last session time is 2.30pm.

Also worth mentioning there is one toilet available, but due to the layout of the building there are no disabled toilet facilities.

Puffin Crafts is open Wednesday – Saturday 10 – 4pm and Sundays 11 – 3pm.
