Microneedling - An Honest Review with Before & After Photos

Disclosure - This post contains products I have both paid for myself and received as a gift. This post has not been paid / asked for.

A little bit of background info......

I am a 37 year old low-maintenance kind of gal. I am definitely not one for elaborate pampering sessions (although I am partial to the odd face mask). After a year of low-maintenance during lockdown though, I started to feel unhappy with both my skin and hair which both started looking really unhealthy so I decided to do something about it.

I wanted something low-maintenance that I would actually keep up but also something that would work. There is no point in putting the effort in if it's not going to work.

With my hair, I started following the Curly Girl Method which I am very happy with and promise to write about soon. With my skin, I decided to re-start microneedling. I first tried microneedling back in 2017 and was so impressed with the results. Back then, the cost was a prohibitive factor in continuing with the treatment as it was £130 every few months (with Swiss Clinic) which is a lot of cash and I didn't feel comfortable regularly spending that amount of money on skincare at that moment.

Fast forward to 2021 and I am now at a place where I do want to invest in my skin and hair. £130 is still a lot of money and I did try and find a UK clinic that offered the treatment/ a cheaper alternative but I couldn't find anyone (read on though - I did eventually find somewhere in the UK who offer this significantly cheaper).

However, I know Microneedling works so I decided to treat myself and re-ordered from the Swiss Clinic. I will say, I am still really happy with the kit from the Swiss Clinic but as it comes from Sweden, it took a good six weeks to arrive and like I say, £130 is expensive.

£130 Swiss Clinic Microneedling Kit

Swiss Clinic Microneedle

I posted some of the results using my Swiss Clinic kit and a lovely reader put my in touch with a lovely local business (Hola Lovely) based in Jarrow who offer Microneedling. Their starter kit is just £50 which is a huge saving. Hola Lovely sent me one of their kits to try as a local alternative to my Swiss Clinic kit with no obligation to post. I would 100% prefer to support a local business if I can so the rest of this post will focus on the products I have been using from Hola Lovely

The Results

Microneedling takes very little time - around 3 minutes at bedtime 2-5 times per week. Before I go into the specifics, I wanted to share some of my before and after photos. You can see results pretty quickly, I would say within a week and you can definitely see my skin is less red, in a lot better condition, smoother and all-round much more fresh looking. This is why I was so happy to spend a bit of cash on the treatment as I know it works!

My skin feels much brighter, clearer and plumper and I am really happy with the results. Microneedling is often described as the new Botox. Now I've never had Botox so cannot compare but my skin does feel like it's had some kind of miracle treatment.

Hola Lovely Microneedling Kit

The Hola Lovely Microneedling System has been developed by an aesthetic practitioner. The 'Lovely Roller Kit' is priced at £60 (currently on offer for £50) and includes everything you need to get started:

  • Super Lovely Serum with Matrixal 3000, Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid
  • Lovely Dermal Roller in Rose Gold with 540 pin Titanium Head (CE approved)
  • Dermal Roller Disinfectant Spray
  • Head Band
  • Gift Box

You can find out more and order here:  https://holalovely.co.uk/lovely-roller-kit

Replacement products are also available to order online. Your Dermal Roller will probably need replacing every 3 months or so. You can buy individual products online here.

The Microneedling Kit is beautifully packaged and would make a lovely gift for Mothers Day (or just a nice thing to receive in the post as a treat for yourself). The attention to detail and branding is fab.

Below is a close up of the Derma Roller - it does look a little scary but I promise, it doesn't hurt.

My Microneedling Routine

As I have used a Microneedling system before, my routine is a little different to the one recommended by Hola Lovely - you receive full instructions in your kit. They recommend using the roller twice per week and applying the serum before and after using.

Personally, I prefer a 5 days on, 5 days off system with a few weeks break every few months. It is important to give your skin a break and allow it to heal and you should never use the roller for more than 6 days in a row.

My routine takes place in the evenings just before bed. I cleanse my skin as normal and then roll the Dermaroller all over my face in different directions for a couple of minutes before massaging the Super Lovely Serum into my skin. I usually read for 30 minutes after this which gives the product time to sink in. Please ensure you read the full instructions provided before starting on your own Microneedling journey.

Using a microneedling system does leave your skin red, especially during the first few weeks of using it and it is recommended you do not apply make up after using which is why I think it is much better to use in the evenings.

On the mornings after I have used my roller, I wake up with super plump skin which I love but even on the mornings I haven't used it, my skin still feels so much better.

That's all it takes! Just 3 minutes per night for a few nights per week. It really is a low-maintenance way to look after your skin.

Benefits of Microneedling with Super Lovely Serum

  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Age spots and sun damage are both clinically proven to reduce in severity
  • A reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Clinical studies have found a huge 76% reduction in acne scarring and enlarged pores
  • Clinical studies have found an increase of 38% in skin hydration
  • Clinical studies have found a 25% reduction in oil and pimples
  • Skin appears more plump and smooth
  • Creating a more even tone
  • Improve skin elasticity

Microneedling works by creating tiny microchannels in your skin which triggers the healing process and the production of collagen. The microchannels created also allow increased absorption of any product applied and it can penetrate more deeply into your skin.

The Super Lovely Serum contains the following ingredients and benefits:
  • Matrixyl 3000 which mimics the skin's broken down collagen and encourages the skin to produce new collagen and elastin which leads to strong and youthful skin.
  • Vitamin C which boosts collagen production and leads to firmer, plump skin with less fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also fights free radicals caused by the sun and leads to a more even skin tone.
  • Hyaluronic Acid which attracts moisture, hydrates the skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Swiss Clinic Vs Hola Lovely

Both products work brilliantly for me and I would still recommend both as they both do the job exceptionally well.

For me though, Hola Lovely wins due to speed of delivery (a few days as opposed to six weeks), providing much better value (£50 for a starter kit from Hola Lovely compared to £130 with Swiss Clinic), the fact that they are a lovely local business (based in Jarrow) and the items are beautifully presented in a gift box. Plus you get a lovely hairband with Hola Lovely and this is not included with Swiss Clinic.

There are no other differences that I can see / feel.

Microneedling FAQs

I have received some questions about Microneedling over on Instagram and thought I would do my best to answer them here. I will say, I received a few which were very specific about skin types / pregnancy which I don't feel qualified to answer, I am sure if you get in touch with Hola Lovely they will be happy to help though (email HolaLovely@Outlook.co.uk). These answers are based on my personal experience......

Does it hurt?

I have a high pain threshold and it doesn't hurt me, I actually find the sensation to be fairly satisfying. It feels like lots of prickles over your skin, kind of like an exfoliator. For the first few weeks, your skin feels like it is sunburnt immediately after use, this dies down within 30 minutes and after a few weeks of using the treatment, I no longer have this sensation.

Does it cause bleeding?

No, Microneedling does not cause your skin to bleed.

Does it leave your skin red?

For the first few weeks, my skin was tight and red immediately after the treatment for around 30 minutes (akin to sunburn). Recently, this has died down and it's not as noticable now that I am few weeks in and my skin is getting used to the treatment.

Where to Order

I still love the results of Microneedling and I do think the photos speak for themselves. I also think it is an ideal 'at-home' treatment for those who are missing facials / their regular appointments with their beautician right now. £50 is still a bit of an investment, but considering this includes a Dermaroller, Serum, Antiseptic Spray, Hairband and Gift Box, I think the Hola Lovely Kit provides excellent value for money and I am happy to recommend.
