What's On for Kids & Families in the North East | 18th & 19th March 2017


There's lots to do around the North East this weekend and I am sharing a bumper 15 events that are happening across our region. We are heading to Durham Cathedral (which has just been named as the best Heritage site in the UK) for the first time ever. Super excited about that! Then we're heading to The Northumberland Arms in Felton for Sunday lunch. Yum! Look out for posts featuring both next week but for now, here's what's on in the North East this weekend:

18th March | FREE Canny Comic Con 2017 | The City Library

This FREE event takes place from 10:30am - 3:30pm at Newcastle City Library. Expect an in-depth Star Wars design workshop, expert talks and drop-in drawing sessions. More details here


18th March | The Gunge Show | Washington Arts Centre

If you're looking for a silly & fun show for kids (and their grown ups), then look no further! Expect gunge and lots of it! The show takes place at 2pm. Tickets are just £6.50 each.  Buy tickets and find out more details here


18th March | FREE Super Antweight Robots | Gateshead Libraries

This FREE ticketed event is part of the MakerFaireUK and is your chance to meet the team behind the TR2 robots (who were semi-finalists in Robot Wars). You can then build your own robot from scratch using radios, motors and craft materials before battling it out with other robots in the arena. Suitable for children aged 6+ and their families. Reserve your free ticket and find out more here.


18th March | FREE Gosforth Community Book Festival | Newcastle School for Boys

Brought to you in collaboration with Seven Stories and suitable for ages 3 to 16, the Gosforth Community Book Festival is perfect for bookworms. Expect talks, book signings, activities, arts, crafts, creative writing and more.  More details here


18th March | FREE Family Coding Fun | Birtley Library

Birtley Library are holding a free family coding morning. Learn some easy code and create your own sounds and disco lights. Free event but tickets should be pre-booked. Recommended for ages 7+ Pre-book your free ticket and find out more here


18th - 19th March | Lambing Apprentice | Broomhouse Farm, Wallington

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the lambing team (suitable for ages 10+ - children to be accompanied by an adult). You will learn how to care for newborn lambs, bottle feed orphan lambs, provide feed and water for the lambs and of course - mucking out. Tickets are £30 + regular National Trust admission.  Find out more and book here


18th - 19th March | Lambhouse Live | Broomhouse Farm, Wallington

Take a tractor to Broomhouse farm and enjoy getting up close to live lambing in action. Take a tour of the shed and bottle feed lambs. Tours are priced at £6 per adult and £5 per child (under 2's free) and regular National Trust admission applies. Pre-booking is advised.  Book tickets and find out more here


18th - 19th March | Great War Weekend | Tanfield Railway

Join Tanfield Railway as they turn the clock back to 1917 for their annual Great War weekend. There will be staff in period uniforms and displays from national and local organisations about the impact of war.  More details here


18th - 19th March | Play & Invent - Gigantic Cardboard Inventing | Discovery Museum

We've taken part in some of the Discovery Museum Play & Invent workshops before and they really are fantastic. This weekend's event will involve crafting with recycled materials on a large scale. This event is suitable for ages 3-11 years old (and their families) and tickets are a bargain £3 for kids and £1 for accompanying adults. All materials are provided and under 2's are free. There are two sessions per day and tickets should be pre-booked. Find out more and book here


18th - 19th March | Get Crafty for Mother's Day | Souter Lighthouse

Head to Souter Lighthouse and create a special Mother's Day card between 11am - 4pm. Craft activities cost £1 and normal admission applies.  More details here


18th - 19th March | Model Railway Show | Ormesby Hall

Visit Ormesby Hall and enjoy their permanent model railways (including a fab Thomas the Tank Engine display) alongside additional layouts, model making and trade stands. Tickets are £2.50 per adult and £1 per child (regular admission applies to house and gardens) More details here


18th March | Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom | Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Ben & Holly are visiting Tyne Theatre & Opera House this weekend. Tickets are available from £14. There are four performances in total. Find out more and buy tickets here


19th March | Justin's Party Live | Sunderland Empire

Justin Fletcher is heading to Sunderland Empire on Sunday. You can catch his show at 11am and 2pm. The show promises to be one big party and you'll meet Justin's new puppy. Buy tickets and find out more here

19th March | Free Family Fun Day | Tyneside Irish Centre

Head the the Irish Centre in Newcastle for their FREE family fun day between 12noon and 4pm. There will be Ceili dancing, face painting & party games. Children's lunch bags and sandwiches will be for sale alongside drinks. More details here


19th March | Make a Newspaper Plant Pot & Plant a Seed | Seaton Delaval Hall

Seaton Delaval Hall hold a different craft activity every Sunday between 11am-1pm. This week it's plant pots. Crafts are free but regular admission applies.  More details here

  1. Wonder if I'll ever get a weekend to plan a day out? It's been crazy the last few weeks!! And next two weekends im away! really fancy the broomhill farm at wallington-got great reviews from friends last year!
