A Trip to Stonehenge with Kids | A Memorable Travel Adventure

Tips for taking your kids to visit Stonehenge

There are so many adventures that I could have written about for this post - being lost in the souks of Marrakech or walking amongst Mayan pyramids in Mexico or perhaps diving with sharks or travelling all the way to Spain with three kids (yep - that certainly was an adventure) but when it comes to thinking about my most memorable travel adventure, it has to be the time that we visited Stonehenge back in 2015. It's an experience that I can still vividly picture and whilst there are other souks, other pyramids and other bus journeys - there is only one Stonehenge.

For us, travelling to Stonehenge was a real adventure. We live in Northumberland and it almost felt like some sort of pilgrimage driving all that way & back in 48 hours just to see some stones but I can hand on heart say it was worth it and Stonehenge is somewhere I believe everyone should see at least once.

Stonehenge was super busy when we visited and there were tourists from all over the world & of every nationality who had made a special trip to come and see the stones. Although it was a long drive from Northumberland, it isn't too expensive or difficult to get to and we are so lucky to have this World Heritage Site within easy reach.

Stonehenge originates from 3000 BC. It blows my mind to try and think back to how long ago that actually was and as you walk around the stones it really feels as if you are transported to another time. There is nothing much around Stonehenge - you certainly won't spot any built up cityscapes in the distance and I imagine the countryside and fields surrounding the stones have remained pretty much unchanged across thousands of years.

Visiting Stonehenge is an adventure I will never forget. Despite not actually being able to touch the stones and being surrounded by 100s of other tourists, I think it has been my only ever Spiritual experience. There is something magical about being next to the stones that just makes you forget your surroundings, forget who you are with and it really gives you a sense of mindfulness. This feeling of perspective you get from being so close to the stones is a feeling that I have carried with me ever since and I think it is this feeling is why this memory is so vivid for me. If I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed I can easily just think of the Stone circle and it calms me down.

Being able to share this moment with my children and husband was just the best thing ever and it is a shared experience we'll never forget. Even Jack who was just 4 years old at the time was quieter, more subdued and in awe of the stones as we walked around them. You're never too young to visit.

I realise you may think I sound a little crackers talking like this - I mean it's only a circle of stones. It was a truly powerful experience though and I urge you to plan your own adventure here and you can see what I mean yourself.

  1. We live just around the corner from Stonehenge but have never been! The traffic is always so bad on that road that it kinda puts us off. We might try and visit next year in the summer as they would make a perfect backdrop for some dramatic pictures. Sounds like you had a good experience!
