This year we are DETERMINED to make some changes in our lifestyle to lead a healthier and happier way of life. Steve and I have already made a start and through walking more and choosing healthier food options we have so far lost 45 lbs between is in the last 10 weeks or so. Woohoo!
It's not just about us though, we want to work together as a family to improve our overall health and fitness. We want to be good role models to our children and for them to grow up following our lead and choosing a healthy life for themselves. We have been looking at lots of ways to do this in a way that we'll all enjoy and as well as taking family walks and swimming together, we have decided that this summer we are going to take up tennis.
Why tennis you may ask? Well first of all, it isn't expensive (we bought 2 rackets and 3 balls for less than £20). Secondly, we think tennis is something that ALL ages and abilities can enjoy, in fact Andy Murray himself starting playing on his local court when he was just three years old and states that he wasn't very good when he first started.
Finally (and perhaps most importantly) after carrying out some research I've found that playing tennis has numerous health benefits including improving your bone and heart health, increasing flexibility and even improving your mood. It is a fantastic all round cardio exercise for burning calories and fat loss so perfect for Steve and I who still need to shift a few stone.
With Wimbledon now in full swing, I think now is the perfect time for us to all try something new together. During our holiday to Spain last week we decided to try our first game one evening which is something we would never usually do on holiday. Holidays for us are usually about relaxing around the pool and beach - not playing sport. We were all looking forward to giving it a go though and although we were complete beginners we all really enjoyed it. We took it in turns playing against each other whilst one person was the umpire and the other two were ball girls/boys so we all kept moving the entire time. It was lots of fun and we had a few laughs (mostly when dad missed the ball) but also it was nice to spend time encouraging each other and promoting positive behaviour/team spirit.
It's fair to say we were rather RUBBISH to start off with however this didn't put us off and I was really surprised at how quickly we all improved. It was lovely seeing everyone's confidence increase and we had a few rallies going by the end of the hour. Most importantly though we all had fun and as Steve and I were rather rusty, we all learned together.
