Our guide to Newcastle Pantomines 2015

There are sooooo many pantomines to choose from in Newcastle and the surrounding areas this year but I see this as a good thing - there is definitely a Christmas show out there for all tastes and budgets. We have press tickets to see Aladdin at the Tyne Theatre, Snow White at The Playhouse and The Wizard of Oz at Northern Stage so look out for reviews featuring those shows in the next few weeks (so excited!!). Without further ado, here is our quick guide to panto's and Christmas shows in Newcastle and the surrounding areas:-

Aladdin at Tyne Theatre and Opera House

Friday 4th - Wednesday 30th December
From £15

Presented by the Newcastle Panto Co, this traditional panto always raises lots of laughs. Follow Aladdin as he pursues Princess Jasmine across Egypt via his magic cave. The Tyne Theatre is the perfect setting for plenty of kids screaming 'He's Behind You' and joining in with lots of fun.

Dick Whittington at the Theatre Royal

Tuesday 24th November - Sunday 17th January
From £12
Newcastle Panto trio Danny Adams, Clive Webb and Chris Hayward return with Charlie Hardwick (Emmerdale's Val Pollard). We watched Danny and co. at Butlins this year and have to say they were superb. We were crying with laughter. The theatre does warn there are bangs, flashes, a few scary moments, panto innuendo and some very old jokes and I know from past experience it is not recommended for the very young. Lots of fun for ages 6+ though.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Whitley Bay Playhouse

Thursday 10th December - Sunday 3rd January
From £9

Blue Genie return with stars Steve Walls and Faye Tozer from Steps. I love that the Playhouse has lots of leg room compared with the more traditional theatres and there is free parking right outside. Blue Genie all have the crowd singing along and joining in with songs old and new.

The Wizard of Oz at Northern Stage

Saturday 28th November - Saturday 2nd January
From £12

Last year's Get Santa was one of our Christmas highlights. We adored the show and I absolutely cannot wait to join Dorothy and Toto as they travel along the yellow brick road. I love hoe Northern Stage are up front when they say this show is for ages 7 and over (although we are taking our 6 yo). If you have older children who have perhaps outgrown panto or would like an alternative, this is the show for you.

Up & Out Christmas Sprout (for under 6's) at Northern Stage

Saturday 14th November - Saturday 2nd January
From £7.50

Not to leave out the Under 6's, Northern Stage have created a performance especially for little ones. We have enjoyed these shows since Jack has been one year old and they are more than suitable for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. I even take my older children and it's not deemed too babyish for them plus if I'm honest as an adult I always end up completely lost in the show and they always manage to fill my heart with warmth. The performances are always laid back with lots of music, puppetry and song. If you are worried that your child would sit through a traditional panto, this is definitely the show for you.

Aladdin at Sunderland Empire

Friday 11th December - Sunday 3rd January
From £11

Starring Terence Maynard, Alison Hammond and Derek Moran, this all star cast promises to take you on a magic carpet ride and journey beyond Sunderland.

Alice in Wonderland at The Customs House, South Shields

Tuesday 1st December - Saturday 9th January
From £9

Alice in Wonderland at The Customs House is described as the little panto with the big heart with lots of fun from Alice, the mad hatter, the white rabbit, Queen of hearts and of course Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.

Santa's Naughty Elf and The Christmas Caper at The Customs House, South Shields

Saturday 5th December - Thursday 24th December
From £6.50

Santa's naughty elf wants to end Christmas (oh no) and must be stopped in this special show for younger children. All children will meet Santa and receive a free gift too meaning this Christmas show is very good value for money and sure to put a smile on everyone's face.

A Christmas Carol with the Metrognomes at Intu Metrocentre

Friday 18th December - Sunday 3rd January (various times)
FREE - No tickets/booking required

This is a FREE yes FREE Christmas show at Intu Metrocentre this year. Featuring the Metrognomes as they tell the tale of A Christmas Carol. There are up to 4 performances per day and lots of family fun, giggles and laughter are promised.

The Snowman at The Sage

Tuesday 22nd December - Thursday 24th December
From £14

This event is not to be missed in the North East with a live orchestra accompanying a special screening of the Christmas favourite. The concert begins with an interactive rendition of 'we're going on a bear hunt' so don't forget your teddy bears.

Would you like to write for us?

We are really spoilt for choice with festive shows in the North East. I would love to see them all! Unfortunately as this is not easily achievable I am looking for guest reviewers. If you are going to see a Christmas show in the North East and fancy writing a review for our site or maybe your child fancies giving it a go? We would love to hear from you. No experience necessary.

  1. So many good shows on Sam! I'm taking the boys to see Aladdin at the Sunderland Empire and cannot wait - just adore the cheesy humour of panto!!!!
