I have had such a busy this week and really needed some downtime with the family so decided to book a table at our local Harvester as an after school treat. The comfortable booth style seating was perfect for us and we enjoyed designing some chef's hats with our children, asking what they'd been up to at school, chatting about some ideas I had for North East Family Fun and asking everyone's opinion and making plans for the weekend. It was lovely to be able to give my children my undivided attention like this without worrying about doing the dishes or cleaning the kitchen.
The children's menu at Harvester was very good value (£5 for a main and dessert) and there was large choice which was nice to see. Jack decided to make his own chicken wraps whilst the older two opted for tomato pasta. You can choose any side and vegetables too.
The portion sizes were fantastic and I was impressed that children (and grown ups) can visit the salad bar as often as they like completely free of charge. Our children are learning about healthy living at school at the moment so decided to actually help themselves to some extra salad which is a bit of a rarity!
As it was a special treat, we decided to go all out and order steak. Harvester steaks have been matured for 28 days and I have to say they tasted great! I went for the classic Sirloin with Jack Daniels sauce and wings combo (2 duck wings, 2 chicken wings) and managed to clear my plate!
Steve went for the sticky steak and rib combo which was a mammoth plate of food, again all delicious and it didn't last too long.
In true family style we decided to share puddings with the kids - there was no way we could order our own after our main course feasts. We shared a few ice cream sundaes and a bowl full of jelly. All arrived on our table in no time and providing extra spoons was no problem to the staff at all.
I will be the first to admit the kids were a bit annoyed when I said we were going out for dinner. They don't like being torn away from their computer screens and tv in the evening. They agreed when we were out though that it was a good idea and we all had a really nice time catching up with each other.
We have decided to re-create the Harvester atmosphere at home this weekend and found a recipe for their Mexican Salsa Wings on the Harvester youtube channel (see video below). We are going to get the kids involved and make our own dry rub to create our very own Harvester-style chicken wings to enjoy at home.
I would love to hear how you catch up with the family when you are all busy through the week. Let me know if you have an suggestions.
