Child-friendly places to eat in Scalby near Scarborough

We recently enjoyed a fantastic staycation at the new Ready Camp situated on the Camping and Caravan Club site in Scalby near Scarborough in North Yorkshire. It was the end of the school holidays and pay day seemed like a million miles away so we were keen to save money whenever we could. We cooked in the tent quite a lot of the time but there were times when we wanted a break and ventured out for something to eat too.

Our tent was literally next door to a Crown Carvery Pub (Scalby Manor) and usually I would avoid this sort of place but it was SO convenient (and cheap). Although in hindsight, breakfast for the 5 of us was almost £26 and I wish we hadn't been as lazy and hunted out more hidden gems instead!

The village of Scalby is a 2 minute drive from the camping and caravan club site and parking throughout the village is ample and free. We preferred dining in Scalby over Scarborough as parking cost us £6 per day in Scarborough (although it was free after 6pm) and being the last week in August it was sometimes difficult to find a space.

Daisy Tea Rooms

Daisy Tea Rooms in Scalby are less than a 5 minute drive from the campsite. I wish we had discovered this place earlier and enjoyed their homemade afternoon tea (bargain at £8.50 each). Instead, we stopped for breakfast before our day trip to Whitby.

It was a lovely sunny morning so we decided to sit in the gorgeous gardens. We ordered a bacon, sausage, egg & tomato bap, beans on toast, 2 sausage sandwiches and a Welsh Rarebit. To drink we shared a pot of tea for two, a strong black coffee plus two glasses of fresh juice. Our food was all delicious and served on proper crockery which was a lovely little touch. Our total bill was just £26 so virtually the same as the Crown Carvery! So annoyed we didn't discover Daisy Tea Rooms earlier in the week!

As we ate breakfast quite late, we didn't need to eat again until teatime (which was fish and chips at the Magpie Cafe in Whitby - yum).

The Nags Head Pub for Sunday Lunch

One way we like to save money is to use our tastecard - there are quite a few independent restaurants that are signed up to the scheme and I was delighted to see The Nags Head in Scalby Village allowed you to use your card on a Sunday to get 2 Sunday lunch's for the price of 1. They only serve Sunday lunch in this pub (between 12noon-2:30pm) - no other food is available and there is only a choice of 2/3 meats (or you can ask for a selection). This suited us perfectly though and I was impressed that the meat was locally sourced and slow cooked with homemade yorkshires and roasties, proper gravy and seasonal veg. Our entire lunch for the 5 of us including drinks (including 2 that were alcoholic) was only £26 using our tastecard. Bargain or what!

Mmmm our Sunday lunch was everything we could ask for - filling, flavoursome and homely. I would honestly drive all the way to Scalby again just for this bargain. There were a lovely selection of homemade desserts and puddings on the chalkboard but unfortunately we were far too full up and an afternoon at the beach beckoned.

How do you decide where you are going to eat out during a staycation? Do you go for what's convenient or hunt out hidden gems and bargains?

  4. You found some lovely places to eat! I never think to look for restaurants before a holiday but clearly it pays off. Nags Head looks like a great place to eat with the kids (and what a great price!) Thanks for linking up with #YorkshireFamily
