Newcastle NE1 Restaurant Week - Our recommendations

Newcastle NE1 restaurant week returns next month between 3rd-9th August. For those who aren't familiar, restaurant week happens a few times per year with some of Newcastle's top restaurants taking part and offering diners special menus at the bargain price of either £10 or £15. There are over 70 restaurants taking place (check them all out along with their menus here) and booking is highly recommended as the week is very, very popular. Today, I am bringing you my top recommendations of where to book.

Best for Groups

I recently enjoyed a night sampling cocktails at Coast to Coast and have to say it is such a fun bar with a great soundtrack (if you're into cheesy 80's/90's) and fantastic cocktails. Their restaurant week deal is 2 courses and a cocktail for £15 which is good value. Perfect for a girls get together.

DAT Bar and The Fat Hippo are firm favourites of ours and have the perfect atmosphere for groups. DAT Bar are offering Two Pizzas for £10 (bargain!) and The Fat Hippo 2 courses for £10. If you've never sampled a hippo burger, now is the time to do it!

Another fantastic restaurant for groups is Fujiyama which serves Teppan Yaki cuisine with your own chef cooking at your table. It may not be fine dining but it is lots of fun and 2 courses for £15 which includes 9 separate dishes is a real saving on their normal prices.

We tried Lane 7 during last restaurant week and were hugely impressed with the quantity and quality of food available. They are offering 2 courses for £10 during restaurant week.  My final recommendation for groups is The Herb Garden which serves lovely pizzas and will be perfect for groups as you can order a pizza and a glass of prosecco or bottle of peroni for £10 so no awkwardness when splitting the bill here.

Best for Families

We're going to be trying the Coop chicken house which I have heard is super family friendly. They are offering half a chicken, 2 sides and a shot of sauce for £10 so we are hoping to split 2 of these between the five of us. £20 exc drinks for a family meal out is a bargain.

Gusto has always been a good place to take children - kids can always make their own pizza and enjoy dessert for £5.95 and during restaurant week grown ups can join them with 2 courses for £15.

Our children love La Tasca and with 3 mini tapas, a dessert and a drink for £5.95 it is always a bargain. The laid back atmosphere tricks you into believing you are on holiday and during restaurant week grown ups can enjoy three tapas for £10.

My final recommendation is the Tyneside Bar Cafe which is attached to the Tyneside Cinema. Easily one of our favourite spots in town the food is always freshly made and enticing and children are welcome too with reasonably priced food and snacks available from only £1. During restaurant week, grown ups can order three courses and a drink for only £15. Bargain!

Best for Date Night

Some of Newcastle's top restaurants are taking part in restaurant week and there are some serious bargains to be had if you fancy somewhere a little bit special. You can't beat the atmosphere and delicious modern British food from Blackfriars who are offering 3 courses for £15 during restaurant week.

My top picks from 21 Hospitality Group would have to be Cafe 21 (where we tried during last restaurant week) and Caffe Vivo who serve authentic Italian cuisine.

Restaurant week could be your chance to try the recently refurbished Malmaison #chezmal restaurant with burger and fries for only £10 and my top tip if you really want to impress would be to book The Bridge Brasserie at The Vermont Hotel which is an elegant restaurant with flawless service. During restaurant week you can enjoy three courses for £15 which is a serious saving on their normal prices.
