Dinner with Kids at The Northumberland Arms: A cosy Country pub with rooms

Felton is a lovely little village in Northumberland. It is just one mile from the A1 but has the sort of charm that makes you feel as if you are in the middle of the countryside. It is the perfect place if you fancy a 'run out in the car' and on Thursday evening we did just that.

We aren't strangers to Felton and absolutely adore The Running Fox bakery, who in our opinion serve one of the best afternoon tea's in our region. The river Coquet runs through the village and if you are looking for a place to feed ducks, Felton is the place to be. The village is home to some of the friendliest and happiest ducks we have ever met - I think it must be something to do with being fed fresh artisan bread from The Running Fox bakery every day.

The Northumberland Arms* is a friendly country pub in the heart of the village. We parked outside and loved how inviting and warm the pub looked - we couldn't wait to get inside.

The atmosphere was relaxed, warm and cosy - I just love a pub with real fires. We were shown to our table and relaxed into our surroundings (Harry a bit too much) as we read the menu.

The menu is locally sourced and includes dishes such as East Thirston Farm Herb Crusted Lamb Cutlets and Mixed Bean and Vegetable Casserole with Lemon and Herb Dumpling. Steve opted for Runny Yolk Scotch egg with dipping soldiers and homemade brown sauce to start followed by the Lamb Shank from the specials board. I ordered the Beer Battered North Sea Cod, Homemade chips and mushy peas from the £8.95 menu which is available Monday-Thursday 5pm - 7:30pm.

Whilst Steve and Harry enjoyed their starters, I was invited to take a little tour of the bedrooms (with my little sidekicks).

I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful the rooms were, they have been furnished and decorated to a VERY high standard. There were lots of luxurious treats too including fabulous hospitality trays stocked with Bari infused teas (fresh milk is delivered on request), fluffy white bathrobes in every room, lifestyle magazines and complimentary mini toiletries. I could really see myself spending an afternoon relaxing in style here.

Would you just look at the bathrooms! Absolutely stunning! One of things I find hardest about being a parent is that you rarely get a chance to properly relax in the bath anymore. These bathroom's have seduced me into booking a room for me and Steve on our next wedding anniversary, just so I can remember what it's like to lie in a bubble bath with a book for an hour. Sounds like heaven to me and is definitely something I'm looking forward to.

Heidi and Jack loved the room's too - especially how they were subtly themed around their favourite animals (The Squirrel and Owl room's were our favourites). Children are welcome at The Northumberland Arms - bed's and cots can be added to your room on request. I am pleased to see there are some dog friendly room's too.

Now back to the food, everything was cooked to perfection and there were five clear plates at the end of our meal. The children's menu is £4.95 and I'm pleased that the chicken nuggets and fish bites were made in house.

We would have loved to try dessert - homemade sticky toffee pudding served with dark caramel sauce and Morwick ice cream sounded like my kind of pudding! Unfortunately we all just didn't have the room and it was getting late so we have decided to save desserts for next time (and there will be a next time).

As we left we had a little peak of the new River Room which is available for groups of 30+. I can't think of a nicer space for a small party or family get together.

We left The Northumberland Arm's feeling very impressed. The pub is warm, stylish and inviting with delicious hearty food. It is definitely worth the drive for us and if it was my local I would never be away from the place.

  1. The chocolate chip cookies at San Francisco restaurants had too many chips and it tasted great. Valet parking was complimentary for us and they were professional and quick in checking in and out.
