A family of 5 with a zest for life

Taking the kids to the Cinema without spending a fortune

My timehop app this morning reminded me that I once paid £48 for 2 of us to visit the cinema. WHAT!!!! I must have been mad. These were gallery seats at the IMAX as a treat but I doubt I would ever pay that again. We do love going to the cinema as a family though and it is the perfect activity for a rainy day so I thought I'd write a little post about the best deals to be had.

Remember, you can usually take your own food and drinks to the cinema (I once witnessed somebody take in a whole pizza - maybe a step too far?). We always make up our own pick n mix bags with sweets from the supermarket and take our own juice to keep costs down, For more tips on taking your children to to cinema, check out this post from Ashlie at Sugar Rushed.

Thanks Kim for the picture

  • Odeon
Every Saturday and Sunday morning and throughout school holidays you can watch a film at kids club for only £2.50 per ticket. You can pre-book up to four weeks in advance too. Film's are generally less than a year old, you can download the Autumn kids club schedule here.

Odeon also offer a family value ticket where adults pay kids prices and prices are generally cheaper before 5pm Mon-Thurs with a supersaver ticket. If you regularly attend the cinema it is worth signing up to a premier card as you can save points to exchange for free tickets or snack.

Again, every Saturday and Sunday and throughout the school holidays Vue run Kids AM. Tickets are a bargain at only £1.75 each or £3 for a 3D film. Films currently include sing along frozen and box trolls.

Empire Cimema's run Empire Jnrs where tickets are only £1.25 each!! These are usually available on weekends and school hoildays. Here are the listings until the end of the year. The Nativity, Arthur Christmas and The Grich are definitely all worth a visit at that price

Family tickets are only £20 off peak at empire and standard tickets are only £3.50 each on a Tuesday. Check out their prices here.
  • Cineworld
If you go to the cinema regularly and like to watch the latest releases, the cineworld unlimited card could be for you. Priced at only £16.40 per month or £196 per year, you can go to the cinema as often as you like! Read more and apply here.

Movies for juniors at Cineworld are only £1.50 for 2D films or £3 for 3D films.
  • Tyneside Cinema
Tyneside cinema is an independent cinema in the centre of Newcastle. Every Saturday and Sunday they show a family film for only £3.20 per ticket in their Children's Film Club. Every child will receive a free lollipop and raffle ticket entry to the cinema's special prize draw. You can buy juice and popcorn for only £2.
  • JamJar Cinema
JamJar is a lovely independent 42 seater cinema in Whitley Bay (My lovely friend Mandy blogged about taking her children here). Make sure you sign up to their newsletter as they often run fab deals. For example you can see Mr Peabody and Sherman this weekend (including Saturday night) for only £3 per ticket. I have had a peek at their Christmas schedule and they are showing lots of classics including Elf, Scrooged and Miracle on 34th street for £6.50 per adult and £5 per child

Do you take your children to the cinema? Do you have any tips to share?
