Heritage Open Days - FREE days out 11th-14th September

From 11th-14th September thousands of places across the UK will be opening their doors FOR FREE! What a perfect excuse to discover local gem's right on your doorstep. You can search places taking part and find out more on the Heritage Open Days Website:- www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Remember, entry to all of these events and places is FREE on the dates specified.

There are a huge 357 events taking part in the North East alone! Here are my top picks:-

Gibside, Rowlands Gill, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE16 6BG
Such a fantastic day out for the whole family - take the bus (or walk) up to the stables and enjoy the indoor play and discovery zones, take a picnic on the stunning avenue in front of the gorgeous chapel, burn off some energy in the huge strawberry castle play area (complete with castles, stocks and zip wire) or challenge yourself in the low and high rope challenges. A real gem of a place to visit for both children and grown ups alike. Always lots going on with amazing exhibits. Expect lots of dressing up and crafts. Don't miss a trip to the gorgeous book loft as well. Sagedenum Roman Baths, Forts and Museum. Buddle Street, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear, NE28 6HR
A lovely hands on museum and fort to explore - dress up as a Roman, find out what life was like and enjoy spectacular views over the Tyne.

Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 2SH
Lindisfarne Castle really is spectacular. There are free nets and buckets to borrow and explore the rockpools, the chance to spot seals from the battery and children's trails around the castle. A fantastic National trust property with lots to explore - hunt for red squirrels, play in the wild west woods, walk along the river, have fun playing on the play train, explore the wildlife hide, house and gardens and lots more.

Cragside, Rothbury, Northumberland, NE65 7PX

A lovely smaller National Trust property with beautiful gardens to explore (or run around) and a stunning hall to discover. There is a small natural play area for children too.
